1996 F150 4X4 - Steering weirdness

In Nov of 2007 I had the brakes replaced on this truck, 1996 F150 Supercab, 4X4. The shop told me that the upper and lower bushings should be replaced but I couldn't afford to do it then.

Fast forward to last weekend. I was coming off a highway and making a left turn. After I went about 20 feet and had already steered straight again the steering wheel pulled to the right sharply. I corrected it back to center and it pulled sharply to the left. I corrected that back to center. I drove the truck very slowly for several miles, nothing else happened.

Now I am noticing this same behavior almost every time I drive it now. Is this the upper and lower bushings? Or do I have other problems?

Thanks, Ben

After doing some research and talking to some friends "we" think it is probably the steering gear box.
Is this something a novice mechanic can do in the driveway? Is there a way to pinpoint if it is for a fact the gear box, before I go and buy one?

Thanks, Ben
