Upper Ball Joint

I can't seem to get a good answer out of anyone yet...so im hoping this is the right place to ask:

Do I have to buy upper control arms if I am just needing ball joints or can I just get ball joint replacements? It seems to me I could "just" replace the ball joints, but some peeps have said I have to buy the upper control arm with the BJ's built in.

If someone could, please clear this up for me

Thanks

no, you don't have to buy the new arm. you can press new ball joints into the old arm, but the UCA does have bushings on it that are prone to dry rot, so it is better to replace w/ a new arm.

I just did this on Sunday. You need to replace the entire upper control arm. Only upside is that if you get the Moog UCA's, they come with a grease fitting.

I asked this same question on the guy asking about lower ball joints: Are you changing both the uppers and the lowers? If not, how do you know which ones are bad? I have one squeeking horribly but I can't tell which one it is so I just grease them all but i'm wanting to replace them since greasing just temporarily fixes it.

when you rock the tire from top to bottom which end gives? that'll let ya know

and a temporary way that can sometimes help with the squeak is try to find a needle for a grease gun and pop it through the boot and fill it up

Nothing appears to be loose when I try to move the wheel from top to bottom. That's how i've been greasing them but it doesn't last too long.

If one is bad, rest assured the other 3 are not far behind.

I use a grease gun with a needle fitting to grease them. They don't have grease fittings.
