Wrong Shocks??

I have a 98' Navigator with air ride suspension. Last week I needed to have it inspected and the shop told me I needed rear shocks, so I said go ahead and replace them. Well when I got the truck back the "check susp" light came on. I told the shop about it and they pulled it back in to see if they forgot something but everything seemed ok. But after doing some research I found that there are 2 different shocks, 1 for air ride and 1 for non air ride. Now my question is, whats the difference between the two? How can the wrong shocks make a light come on with no sensors on the shock itself? Thanks!!!
