Do the 2001 Sport F150's sit lower than the XLT's?

I have a 2002 sport 2x4 and its taller then a regular 2x4 xlt... i think they are bigger tires but im not sure if thats the only reason why

I think you're right. My 02' came stock with 275/60/17 where as most F-150's in those years came stock with 16" wheels.

My 03 XL 2x4 Came stock with 255/70r/16 s so those 275 with 17s will lift it quite a bit

The only 4x2's that sit lower are the Lightnings and Harleys.
