2004 F150 Hard steering

2004 F150 V8 super cab 82,000 miles.
The steering suddenly got hard to turn. It is fine at speed, but when not moving or moving slowly, it turns hard and does not return to center without effort.
I did a search and saw other members that posted of the same problem but I didn't fine anyone that said it was resolved. I don't want to buy a $500 rack if I don't really need to. That is one pricey MF.

Well, at least this time there will be a follow up post with a resolution.
After being told by the front end shop that I needed a new pump, and the dealer told me I needed a new rack at $800, I found the problem to be...
The U-joints on the steering column shaft. I shot them with penetrating oil and worked them back and forth, then shot them with chain and cable lube. They freed up instantly. Problem solved.
