xlt to FX4 conversion
I'm pretty sure the only difference around those years were skid plates and rancho shocks, oh and the FX4 stickers, of course. I've never owned an FX4, just going by what I've learned on this site.
rear leaf springs in the 04+, not sure about previous years. I would just put a lift on your truck with new shocks, skidplates, and then a custom 4x4 sticker.
Problem solved and you have your own personal edition FX4

yes it is possible and easy. the only difference is the Rancho shocks and the FX4 stickers if you have a XLT. Most XLT's have the skid plates, mine does anyways. You can get the decals from lots of places and for the shocks I would suggest the Bilsteins they are better shock. Beside the supposed "Rancho" shocks that Ford put on the FX4's were basically a OEM shock painted red and white. They are just made by Rancho for Ford.
shocks are cake to change out. Definately suggest Bilsteins. Check out web extreme web page. They have all kinds of custom stickers for ya.
For a write up, you could use the search function to try and find it, or get on Google and do a search for it.
But it is basically taking of the bolts... taking out the shocks and putting the new ones in

If you have the towing package, you have the same shocks as the FX4's, only with a different paint job. If you have the off road package, you have all three of the FX4 skidplates. If you don't have any of these all you need are three skidplates, better shocks and a decal.
