replace the whole thing?

Got a quick question. I'm replacing the lower balljoint on my driver side. One person tells me I can't replace it seperately and that I have to replace the whole arm . Is that true because my local autoparts sold me a balljoint all by itself.

The lower ball joint can be replaced separately from the lower control arm.

It is the upper ball joint that requires a new upper control arm.
