air vs overload spring
air vs overload spring
i have 2 ideas for my oddball application. i have 7" arc leafs for the rear of my truck, they hold the camper up fine enough for just leafs but it makes offroading hard (without the camper of course). so my thought was a lighter spring pack that gave me the height i needed, with either airbag in the rear or overload springs in the rear. im worried offroading will tear or unseat the airbag, im not talkin a little flex here. so i thought overloads with shackles on the ends around the spring pack would be quick enough to remove i could use them when i needed them.
Would it be a concern with the air suspension to take it wheelin? i know air is the better ride.
add your 2cents and experiences if ya would, thanks guys

Air would be the route I take. Make sure you get a GOOD quality system though. No JCWhitney specials. Firestone (no ford tire jokes) makes a very good air bag, it is just a smaller version of what is used on 18 wheelers. I would not be worried about the bag getting torn up when off roading, think about where they are located, if you get rocks and such up in there, you are going to tear up alot more than the bags. With that said, make sure when you offroad, you leave some pressure in the bags to keep them from smashing together. I've seen one guy in particular who released all of the pressure when offroading and a couple of hard full extend to full compress articulations smashed the air bags up.
i wasnt thinking rocks tearing it, i was thinking mud with gravel in it perhaps. that and i dont know how well they take to being compressed and extended to a suspensions full throw, if they can extend much more than they sit at normal ride height. so you think air bags will work if i keep some air in them to keep them from folding up on themselves?
