You only won't be able to get an alignment if there is something wrong with your ball joints. Is that the case?

An alignment shop won't align a vehicle with worn steering/suspension parts. I think it may be the law.

if you are handy with basic hand tools, you can do it yourself for about $225.00 for the parts. I just replaced the upper & lower ball joints, Inner & outer tie rod ends and the idler arm on my 01 expy and the total cost for parts was about $375.00. The local tire shop wanted $225.00 to replace just the idler arm and do an alignment. Dealer cost for all of the above would have been about $1600.00

Don't forget the (2) camber kits for each side. You add these when you replace the upper control arm, if they are not there from previous alignment(s).

I just replaced my lower balljoints yesterday. 1 pair of Moog balljoints: $76.00. Go to www.rockauto.com, they seemed to have the best price! As far as doing the replacement yourself, it's alot easier if you have some air tools and a compressor and a balljoint replacement tool(this is for pressing the new balljoints onto the lower control arms). Putting the new ones on can be a real bitch without a balljoint tool!! Job is pretty straight forward and shouldn't take too long if you have the right tools.

here's one of the times that OEM sucks... make sure that the joints you get have grease fittings so that they can be serviced...

Ford's policy = they are greased for the life of the part...
