How to replace torsion bar keys

I know most of you lift your 4x4's but I'm lowering mine (belltech 3/4 drop). The front is lowered by changing the torison bar keys. I'm wondering if anyone has done this without the factory tools. It seems a bit over the top that these are changed by backing (beating it with a bfh?) the bar out of the key with the truck jacked up. Actually it seems easier said then done. Just looking for some experienced input. I'd like to do it on my own if possible. I have 1/3rd of the rear installed but I don't want to go any further until the front is dropped. Thanks.

You can use a gear jaw puller or c-clamp, but be careful. You may be able to back off the preload enough with the OEM keys to level the front without even replacing the keys.

Thanks. I know you're not a big fan of replacing the keys but I don't see a lot of choices. I tried backing off the stock keys and it's not enough to compensate for a 4" drop in the rear.

However, I did find a pretty detailed write up here:

I just wonder how the ride is going to be with the torsion bar that loose. Even if the the key is cut different, I would assume the end result is still going to be less pressure on the bar itself? Which in return may ride like I have a blown out pair of shocks.
