You can do it yourself. It's a pain in the butt though. They have to be setup perfect or they will burn up quick.

Exactly. THe installation is not that hard. It's setting them up correctly that is the hard part. If they are not set up correctly they will howl and make loud noises or burn up shortly. Honestly, the fact that you have to ask whether or not you can do it yourself says that you can't.

It's not worth spending $700 for the parts only to mess it up and have to spend it again. . but, get 4.88s!

If you never try then you will never know how.

I have 4.56's (Also thinking about Detroit True Tracs) and I dont know if I am going to try them myself. I have talked to some people that say its real intimidating, until you actually get in there.

I think it is hard but with the right tools and the ability to call a knowledgeable person, it can be done. I may see if I can get someone to help me (and make sure I dont mess anything up).

From my experience things like this are usually easier than people make them out to be.

I've seen too many ruined gear sets from improper installation. . I'd find someone who knows how to do gears and that is willing to lend a hand. The hardest part is going to be getting the depth correct, which does take special tools by the way.

Ya, I would like to do my own. It may be a pain but at least I will have learned something. I can definitely borrow the tools and I can probably get someone to help me. If you know someone that has done gears before ask them to help you. Or if you are mechanically inclined I would say go for it. Also I dont think its $700, like someone mentioned. I think it is like $350-$450 for front and rear (w/ master install kits) Yukon, Genuine, ect. gears.

I'm mechanically inclinded and I wouldn't do a set of gears without a pro standing over my shoulder. . If you can truely find me a set of Precision gears for $350-450, I'll be very thankful. The best price I found was $700 with master install kits and fluids.

Heres a good thing about getting them installed, if you let 4 Wheel Parts do the install, they have a lifetime warranty & some shops around here match that so I'm sure they will do the same in the surrounding areas of any 4 Wheel Parts dealers.

$350-$450 doesn't include fluid, but other than that I thought that was just the normal price for a set of gears.

My local 4wheel parts in charlotte, nc wants $1600 for front and back re gearing..Thats parts and labor, Ive just installed 315/70/17 34.4 good year AT extremes with stock 3.55 gear 2001 F150 lariat, to get close to stock is 3.86, and 4.10 is the closest, national gear has the motive gearsets for $167.00 with instalation kits per Diff, If I could get ti done for $400 parts and all for truck, Ide sign up tommorow.. I wish..But I do agree its got to be done right, lots of work to just have it go bad, any place thats reasonable and with a warranty is good..

. . like I said before, please find me a link to where I can purchase Precision gears for a 9.75 and a 8.8 reverse cut differentials.

But anyways, I was going to pay 4WP $1500 for parts, installation, lifetime warranty for a set of Precision 4.88s.
