I have heard you can install the ford FX4 shocks to the front and back and gain a 2-3" lift. Is this true for all other fords, or only for other 4wd models. I have a '06 2wd XLT and wanted to do this and then add a 3" BL but i didnt know if this is possible, let me know, because i am a little wary of the leveling kits, heard some bad stories on them. Thank you.

 

No it is not possible. Shocks do not add height.

 

Normally, you are right. However the 04-07's use coilover shocks up front. A member here has installed the OEM coilovers from a 4x4 on his 4x2 and gained a couple of inches of lift. However, I can't see doing this when a 2.5 inch leveling kit is only about $100, unless someone just gives you a set of 4x4 coilovers.

 

I agree about the coil overs, but all that was mentioned was shocks, not the whole assembly. That is why I stated no.

 

Right, the member here installed the entire coilover assembly. Also, as Kingfish51 stated, shocks won't lift the rear at all. That is easily done with a lift block or add-a-leaf however.

 

Also for the rear you could use the FX4 shocks and the lift blocks from a 4x4 to get the height.

 

Thank you both, and thats what i meant, the coilovers from a FX4 not just the shocks, sorry for the misunderstanding. I think i will just do the leveling in the front from autospring for 2.5" and then lift blocks in the back. What size blocks would i need for about a 1.5-2" rear lift? Also with a 3" body lift, does that include blocks for the back, or if i added the blocks now and the BL later, would i still have the added height from both? What do you recommend between lift blocks and add-a-leaf? I have heard mixed reviews on the lift blocks, and was curious what your take on it was.

 

I believe, the blocks on the back for the 4X4 are 4" and 2wd 2". Not 100%sure about the 2wd blocks.
As far as a body lift, that is what it is. It would be in addition to any suspension lift like changing coilovers and 4x4 lift blocks.
As far as the lift blocks, more than one has done it here, also the reverse, Taking them out to lower the rear. One thing you will have to be careful about is pinion angle. You may need shims to adjust if it gets too severe.
Do a search in the 04-present forum for these types of changes.

 

The 4x4's come with a 2 inch lift block. THe 4x2's don't have a block.

 

Yep, your right. Should have looked at my own before I typed that one up. Knew it was 2" difference at least. That's not saying much though.

 

So i could just purchase a 2.5" autosprings leveling kit for the front and 2" blocks for the back (the stock 4x4 blocks) and that should raise me up around 2" and not change the ride too much and not put extreme stress of the chasis?

Actually, I have talked this all over with the guys at the local Ford dealer, and they say that the FX4 and the 2wd have the exact same coil springs. If you get under the 2wd and the 4wd and look at the bottom of the shocks on both, the 4wd shock has a 3" long shaft extending down from the compression tube. Just an observation I have made in my own quest for the perfect leveling solution. If I try this I will put detailed pics on here.

so what are you saying, add the Fx4 shocks to my 2wd for a 3" lift? and where would this lift be, all around or just the front, or just the back?
