U-joints
U-joints
Well, I've been hearing a slight "clicking" noise from my truck (sounds like its coming from up front) when I change directions. ie, pull into my driveway, stop, put it in reverse, and when I get on the brakes to stop, it clicks (just once), as if something is lose and is moving when I hit the brakes.
I took it to our shop and the guy said he thinks its the Ujoints (everything on the brakes supposedly checks out), and he quoted me $225.
Well I had to go home the next day (it was saturday and they were closed sunday), so I told him I would have to deal with it later. I figured I would tackle it myself, and bought a pair of Ujoints ($24 at rockauto.com).
Last weekend I got the driveshaft removed, got the clips out, but the Ujoint wouldnt budge. BTW, I couldnt find a vise large enough to fit the driveshaft plus 2 good sized sockets (method recommended by Haynes manual). It would have to have like 7 or 8" opening space. So I found an 8" C-clamp and thought I would give that a try. The freaking C-clamp just bends open.
I called a few rental places to see if they carried vises or presses, and either they dont carry that large of a vise, or they dont carry a press. One of the guys I talked to said he just uses a hammer and punch to remove them, but Im not sure how much good that will do...
So, does anybody have any ideas?

I have not had my driveshaft off my F150 (only owned it a few weeks) however I have changed ujoints a few times on my Chevy pickup. I used a hammer and a socket and set the drive shaft on some wood and pounded out the ujoint cap. Another (safer to your drive shaft) option is call a few shops and tell them you have the shaft out and just need the joints changed. I would think that it shoud be $30-40. Some part shops may do this as well if they have the set-up. $225 seems way on the high side and I would not have paid them to do it either. Good luck!
