Front bearing replacement questions…
2001 F-150 SCrew 4x4,140,000 or so miles with ABS
Just got my truck back from the local shop. We just put new brake pads & rotors on 2 weeks ago and started getting a clicking noise we thought was coming from the new brakes. We took it back to be checked & the shop says the right front bearing is going bad & needs replaced. They say we have to replace the entire hub. They’re quoting about $1100 to replace both font hubs. $350 per hub plus 3 hours labor per side.
So here’s my questions:
- Do you have to replace the whole hub to replace the bearing?
- Is this a common repair?
- Does this sound like a reasonable quote?
- Are there any aftermarket hubs that are preferred over the OEM standard part?
- Should I do both sides or just the one that’s bad?
- Is this something they should have checked or noticed when they replaced the brake pads & rotors 2 weeks ago?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

PS: If I have the terminology wrong please correct me. I fix motorcycles not trucks!

I replaced the hub on my truck a couple of week ago. The hub cost $175.00 at O’reilly without front ABS I think it was about 200.00 with front ABS. I changed mine in under an hour. If you fix motorcycles you could fix this. Remove the brake caliper, bracket and rotor. Remove the spindle nut in the center of the hub, then the three bolts on the back of the steering knuckle, then slide it off spindle then put the new one on. Be sure not to place the weight of the truck onto the new hub until you torque the hub nut, it compress the hub together the hub is more fragile than they seem. Also jack both front wheels up so that you can turn the wheels back and forth to get access to the three bolts on the steering knuckle.
When mine went out it was more of a loud road noise than a clicking so you might get a second opinion before spending the cash.
