Replacing Balljoints

My 1999 F-150 has 103 K, and it sounds like my ball joints are going out. My truck makes the popping sound when I drive out of the driveway, and it has started to "hum" at 30 - 40 mph. I'm guessing that it is the upper joints that are going out, but I might as well replace them all while I'm at it. My dad just got all of his replaced on his Ranger for like $600 , but I'm not wanting to spend that much. I'm can do most stuff on my own, so obviously I want to save my money for a boat and do this stuff on my own. How hard are these going to be to replace? How do I check to make sure my ball joints are going bad? I've heard of jacking up the truck and wiggling the wheel, but how accurate is this?
