Why not raise 4x2 with 4x4 coilover ???

I posted this a few times and it seems no one knows the answer, on the surface it looks too easy.

Look at the coilover of the 4x2 and the coilover for the 4x4 ( 04-06 model). It seems like the only difference is a small extension welded to the bottom of the shock for the 4x4 unit. The spring looks to be the same and everything else seems to be exactly the same. I have yet to examine the swing arm to see if they are different. But it seems like , by switching them out, you can raise the front end without buying a leveling kit. The vehicle remains basically stock.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks. YaMon.

Guess it depends on whether you want the look of a stock 4x4 or the level look.

By replacing with the 4x4 coilovers up front, the 4x2 will now be level. However, if you want to go even higher, all you have to do is get one of the front leveling kits ( like Daystar) and also installing the same exact block in the back that the 4x4 comes with. Hell, I found some brand new 4x4 coilover units for about $50, which is 1/2 of what the leveling kits are going for.

If all you want to do is level your 4x2, then I would say that is a decent option--sort of like the 4x4s removing the rear block to level...if I understand you correctly.

No, I want to do the opposite...

What I am actually trying to do and get the blessing of everyone here on the board is to raise the level of a 4x2 to the level of a 4x4 with a front leveling kit installed. Even after putting on a kit like daystar front leveling kit on a 2x4, it is still substantially lower than the 4x4 with the same front leveling kit. This is because the 4x4 has the leveling blocks and the lengthened front shock to boot. If anyone thinks this should not be done, or cannot be done, let me know ASAP. I am about to buy a "used" front ccoilover from a 4x4 with 5 miles of use.

Thanks All.

Gotcha, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Good luck.

YaMon, I would advise against it, the upper control arm will be hitting the coil spring constantly if you raise it more than 2.5". Their have been photos posted on here beofre showing that the 4x4 gains 2" of front lift by having the upper coilover mount positioned lower on the frame than the 4x2, and more than likely the upper and lower control arms mounted lower also. I have a 4x2 with 1 5/8" autospring (2.25") and the factory 4x4 blocks out back (2"). my upper and lower control arms are now at a pretty steep angle, more so than the stock 4x4.

Been trying to get this answered for weeks. Ended up looking up under 4x4's in the parking lots trying to see if anything else was different ( lucky I did not get shot). Based on what you did to your vehicle, it should look like a stock F150 4x4 correct?? with the slight rake still there. Well I guess if that is the best that can be done without completely rebuilding the suspension, I'll have to accept.

Now what do I do with the 4x4 shocks that I just bought?? Glad I only paid $85 + 70 shipping. I'll have to relist now.

YaMon.

Ok, I now own a 1 5/8" autospring front leveling kit, a 2" block to raise the back and a pair of 4x4 coilovers for the front and shocks for the rear. Based on what you wrote, I cannot install the autospring AND the 4x4 coilover.

How about I install the 4x4 coilover ( which should do just about the same thing as the autospring), install the block and the rear shocks in the back?? Will this work??

The reason for NOT installing the autospring is because it will be much easier to sell it. The shocks alone cost me $70 to ship from California and if I send them back am going to lose a lot more. The autospring...will be easier to sell. Do you think this will work ??

Thanks for you info, really appreciate it.

YaMon.

How did your install work out. I have been thinking of installing the coilover and autospring. Thanks

Just got them delivered yesterday. Forgot California was so far and the delivery took longer than I thought. Went up to my brothers metal fab shop and he was really busy. Plus it was cold like hell and the wind was blowing ( for Florida). Ya'll may have to wait another week since I have to be in tampa/Orlando next week and have not (wife) decided if we are staying over the weekend either. It will happen, just don't want to split it in 2 days.

Wayne.
