Cost to change gearing

Gents,

I recently purchased a new 2005 SCREW 4x4 and have plans to level the front and run 35 inch BFGs on the stock rims. I pull a boat in the summer and I am concerned about performance. I figure a gear swap will be in order, either 410s or a 456, what am I looking at for costs of parts and installation ? I am no mechanic so I will have to pay to have it done.

Thanks for your help,

Mark

ps. I just joined this site today and have learned a bunch already !

It'll vary depending on where you are, but the general price seems to be able $500 per axle, so $1000 for you 4x4. Of course thats just an estimate.

I put 4:88 in my to run 35's and tow boat/camper or jeep
Cost me $1486.00 for it to be done. If you get it done have a good shop do it. When you first get it done be sure to do a break in on the gears. Drive 15-20 miles and then stop and let the diff cool down completely before proceeding again. Do this a couple times.
Do not tow anything in the first 500 miles of break in, then when you tow the first time tow a short disatance 45-50 miles and let diff cool down.
By doing these break ins you will prevent the Gear oil from breaking down. When you first put gears in they run extra hot as they wear their selves into place. I have been through numerous break in with my rock crawling jeep. It has given me good wear on them. Be sure to search out good gears. There is alot of junk out there.
I am not sure where you live but if you are in the Portland, OR area give Leonard's Off Road a call. He is a arrogant SOB but he knows his gears......

I have the same truck and am lifting it and was wondering to about the gearing. I emailed and called a few places they all said it could be anywhere from 500 to 600 per axle. So im figuring straight from factory instead from a retail would be like 400-475 per axle. They than told me it could go from lik 300 for install, and i know they are charging me or trying to charge arm and leg so if you coudl do it yourself and buy factory direct, it could be from 1100 to 1300. But probably 1500 if you went to like www.4wheelparts.com to do it.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about the break in period, just that you were not to tow anything for the first 1000 miles or so. Guess I'll start saving up, sounds expensive but hopefully worth it.

i have no experience with changing gears in trucks, but in my 03 Mustang Gt I went from 3.27's to 4.10's and it felt like I gained 50 rwhp. I imagine going from my stock 3.55's to 4.56's will give a similar performance "feel", albeit with a much heavier vehicle. Of course it only cost about $350 for the mustang, which included parts and labor.
