Leaf spring not held together. Is this wrong?

97, 4.2L V6, Auto, Reg cab, Long bed.

I checked the rear leaf springs. They were 3 leaf type. The top 2 were held together with a clamp at Left Rear. The clamp is broken at Right Rear, but the clamp was still in place. There were no clamps at both Fronts.

Am I to clamp all 4 places?

Thanks.

By the way, the bottom leaf was not clamped at all 4 places.

that year of truck was recalled by ford...They installed new clips on my 97...Ford says rear spring can come lose and hit the flue tank...so I would clamp down booth front rear, booth sides.

I am glad I asked. I will get them repaired right away. I didn't know it was a safety issue.

Please confirm for me that I am supposed to clamp the top 2, and leave the bottom one loose. Thanks.

this was a ford recall...I can't confirm that all three springs need to be clamped...you should be albe to tell by the size of clips, your botom spring will be held in place by the u bolts...if my memory is correct, the bottom spring at the rear has a rubber washer presed againt the snd spring.. run your vin number threw a ford dealer to see if the clips were replaced.

on my 04 f-150 all three springs ( front have a clamp/clip) rear springs only have two clips...same set up should apply to your 97..

I went to AutoZone and asked about the leaf spring clamp. One of the senior employees said AutoZone does not carry such a thing and he personally has never heard of re-clamping.

Where can I buy the clamps? I will call Ford about recall tomorrow. Thanks.
