wierd noise while driving
My friend here has an 03 supercrew with a noise we are having trouble nailing down. It is a 4x4 with 120,000 miles on it. It kind of makes a wump, wump wump, on and off noise when you are driving down the road. Its coming from the drivers side. We are both at college and live in college housing and park on the streets so its hard to test things but we jacked up the front and spun both wheels. When you spin the drivers side its like you feel resistance then suddenly it spins free, then you hit resistance again. Could his bearing be going out? This happened to anyone before? We're trying to figure it out before he has to drive 4 hours home for thanksgiving break.
The resistance you feel could easily be the brakes dragging slightly, and not be at all related to the noise you hear.
My experience with whump sounds has been a defective tire. Either way, I would not drive 4 hours without finding the problem. If it is a bearing, it could seize. If it's the tire, it could blow.
On a side note, I hear a noise in my truck when I hit 110mph. It comes from the passenger side and it almost sounds like "!%$^%&$(! Slow down, you a$$hole!" Only happens when my wife is in the truck. Can't figure it out.
