Steering Problems

I don't know much about the inner workings of the power steering gearbox so I am asking here.

The truck steers to both left and right very easily but the truck keeps on going in those directions when I try to center the steering wheel (as to come out of the turn). Obviously, the steering box will need to be replaced or rebuilt. I was wondering how the inner workings of the gearbox could cause this situation. Is there a floating valve stuck? How does the power gearbox work?

Thanks

For what it's worth, 12 years ago I had a 93 F150 4x4 that had this same problem at only 10K miles. Dealer checked it out and found bad ball joints. Ball joints were replaced and the problem never came back. Check these to be sure.

Good luck
