I'm exactly in the same boat as you. Ive got a new 05 supercrew xlt, and want it to be around or slightly higher than 4x4 height. I'd rather go with a suspension kit, but i cant find any that are lower than 6 inches. I'm considering the 6/3 procomp lift kit or the 6' fabtech but i'd either like to see one IRL or some pics. I agree that 6 inches may be too high for a 2wd, and i'll prolly end up calling rancho to see if thier 4inch kit for a 4x4 can be modified to fit the 2WD. If you find anything out plz post it Kingz, laters...

I have looked into the 2 1/2 leveling kit, if that is all your wanting to use as far as a lift you cant put 285/70r17 under it which is equal to a 33" or if you have an 18" rim you can put an 285/65r18 which is almostequal to a 33"

Performance Accessories makes a 3 inch body lift for trucks with the 5.4. This and a leveling kit would put you a little taller than a stock 4x4. Since the suspensions are the same on the new 4x2's and 4x4's, I would bet the Rancho 4 inch lift would work on a 4x2. I'd contact Rancho to make sure. Also, Sykjacker makes a 3 inch lift that consists of replacement coilover shocks and an add a leaf for the rear.
The 285/70-17 and 285/65-18 tires both work out to be approximately a 33x11.50 tire.

Get the Total Chaos kit. I have had all types of lifts on previous trucks and I can tell you that the Total Chaos upper arms and King Coilovers is the only kit out that is the real deal.
