Off Road

I drive an 02F1504x4, I'm begining to take my truck off-road more and more and I'm looking for some mods that will keep me out of the shop. Besides a suspension lift does anyone have any suggestions on how to beef up my suspension, for example, aftermarkent parts that are more heavy duty than stock. Any tips or suggestions welcome! thanks!!

do you have the skid plates for the gas tank, transfer case and front end? I had to add two of these to my FX4. They are pretty cheap when purchased through ford. These can go along way toward keeping you out of the shop.

What about lockers? They can help keep the tow trucks (or tractors) away. A very desireable feature.

good luck and have fun!

I'm in the process of installing skid plates, i'm never considered lockers, I'm sure they are expensive for my truck! Do you suggest a brand?

I would start with shocks (a good adjustable shock like Rancho 9000's or Procomp MXS-6's). Then 33" tires in an A/T or M/T with a 6 ply (C Load Range) or 8 ply (D Load Range) sidewall. Then a good Limited Slip rear differential (Aburn Gear makes a good one).

Approximate Costs:
- adjustable shock $350-$400
- A/T or M/T tires $700-$900
- Limited Slip differential - $600-$700

Depends on what type of offroading you wanna do...
If you are going fast, shock oil heats up and fades rapidly, thus resulting in a springy ride, for that you need a resivored shock.

The Explorer PC MX6's look to be pretty promising with a good ride also.

If the MX6's are too pricey, go for a Bilstein 5100 series shock. $70 and good quality.

Lockers or Limited slips are great, I've gotten away with running without one by just keeping my speed and momentum up.

I'd get a All Terrain tire because they are a lot more versatile than a mudder and have good manners onroad.

Look into heavyduty balljoints also.

I agree with changing tires if your running stock. An agresive off road tire will make a world of difference. Plus if you air down with them you're chances of getting stuck are even smaller.
