steering wheel shake
steering wheel shake
Having trouble with my 2000 ford expedition shaking through the steering wheel. Notice the problem more when I put my 20" wheels on, but, it is still there with the factory wheels. Took it in and the only thing they found was the toe-end allignment was off a little, it dosn't do it all the time, and at low and high speeds. The allignment helped, but it is still there. The steering wheel almost feels like there is too much play, any suggestions?
Welcome! How often were either set of tires rotated and balanced. Did they measure the front rotor runout? Did they do a complete front end inspection before they aligned it? A bit more information will help to get more members to jump in and help.
the 20" wheels are new, well, in the fall they were installed and put maybe 2000 miles on, then taken off for the winter. they sat indoors until i bought the expedition @ 2 weeks ago.I don't know about the rotor runout, but they did check out the front end and said it looked ok.
alignment really hasn't got all that much to do with steering wheel vibration. if its doing it at low and high, sounds like a balancing issue. if the 20's are spinners, forget balancing them, that is impossible. also, how are they balancing them? are they using hammer-on weights or are they using stick on weights that go on the inside? hammer-on is the only way to get the best balance. we sell 20 inch wheels were i work and people always come back complaining about the same thing. these are importanant things to consider. sure the hammer weights dont look all that good on chrome wheels but thats the price to pay. also, you can have the rotors looked at but that typically wont affect anything unless you are coming to a stop and its vibrating. also, i would have the front end looked at. as we all know on the 97-03's, they have the worst ball joint control/arm set up and the ***** at ford wont put grease fittings on them, which ultimately lead to their premature failure.
