BEST shocks

I was just looking to get some info on different types of shocks and your experiences with them. I'm looking for a very comfortable ride, not to springy, or stiff. I'm not really sure which ones to purchase. any help is appreciated fellas.

Hey Bud,

You're probably gonna get as many opinions as there are shocks. Everyone has their favorite brand.

I'm in need of shocks as well, so after searching this site for opinions I decided on the RS9000X since they are adjustable. That way I can dial in the exact ride I want.

FYI: samsoffroad.com is selling these shocks pretty cheap and they come with the remote control for free.

Good Luck

If you want a specific ride quality, buy the Rancho RS9000s and tinker with the settings yourself.

I just purchased a set of Rancho RSX17000's. Got them for Summit Racing for $52 each. Install is a PITA.

I'll second that Spray,

I just put a set of 17000s on my FX4.....I would love to get my hands aroung the neck of the guy that thought it would be a good idea to put a lock nut on the stem of a shock absorber!

The rear shocks are a two person deal. I had my six year old daughter under the truck holding the wrench (which I had jammed in place) on the shock base. Without someone to keep that wrench from falling off, it would be a real PITA.

And what kind of love affair does Ford have with an 18mm wrench---the ONLY one that does NOT come in a set WTF????

Later guys,

Sidewinder

I conquered that mother f'r last night by myself. The fronts were oh so easy, but the rear about killed me. I rounded off the nut that holds the shock from turning so I had to cut the plastic cover off and use a set of vise grips to lock down on the shaft so it would could off. Why couldnt they be normal and use the same connection that the bottom mount on the rear has. My only concern is that I didnt tighten things up enough. I tightened up the top nuts until the shaft started turning. I hope thats good enough.

I got my RS9000X's yesterday... went back and forth deciding whether or not to start installing them... got the fronts done in an hour... pulled out the creeper to get the rears..... played around with the socket and wrench for 30 minutes and gave up...

Gonna have to get a deep 18mm socket, a 12pk and close the garage door so the neighbors can't hear me cuss....

What a PITA... !!

It took me about 1.5hrs just to get the drivers rear off. I did the front in about 30 min or so. The passenger rear was about 30 min worth of work. I'll sell the truck before I ever put new shocks and change the spark plugs again.

i hear ya spray

LOL, I got to change them twice in two weeks. I ordered a set of ranchos and got 4wd shocks instead of 2wd. I didn't figure that out untill i got to the front shocks and they wouldn't bolt up. The place I bought them from sent me 4 new ones. I had to swap the back ones out. It was much nicer the second time. Also I have some advice that runs contrary to alot of post I've read.

1. You DO NOT need to remove any of the tires to change the shocks.
2. Get a 1/2 inch impact wrench 18mm socket for the back. They're cheaper and a 3/8 socket on a 1/2 drive with adapter will not fit.
3. Use a 13/16 spark plug socket for the front.

I am running the bilstiens 7100. I love these shocks. A little pricey, but worth it.
