When to replace wheel bearings

I have a '92 with 139K miles. The factory front bearings have some kind of plastic or nylon bearing cages, which I think is crazy, but they have held up ok. Problem is the plastic is wearing at the roller bearings. I plan on replacing them anyway, but is this wear normal? I always kept them greased. I plan on installing Timken bearings with steel cages and a new grease seal.

sound like normal wear to me, with the front jacked up do you get alot of play by moving the tire back and forth?
