Shake my front, passenger side and hear it go "Thumpk"

Stats:

1997 F150 XLT 4x4
Shocks: Rancho RS9000

For about a month I've been hearing a noise best described as a "THUMPKT" from inside my truck when taking SOME corners or slowing down. It was VERY inconsisent and quite random.

It made the EXACT same noise my front end made when the anti-sway bar linkage broke. I would check the problem out on some days and not see anything.

The noise kept happening so I assumed a shock came loose or broke but the shock looks good.

This weekend it got worse.

While traveling on the highway for weekend vacation some major league a-hole in a POS chevy apparently fell asleep at the wheel while I was passing on the left. He forced me off the road and into the grass.

Later on I would hear a rattle noise that you would expect a loose heat shield to make. Then I started hearing the THUMPKTing noise on bumps and changing lanes.

We pulled off the highway and into a service station where I got under the truck to look at it. While under the front, passenger side my wife shoved the truck on that side and I heard it!

Now please be patient with me because I have no clue what this device is that's making the noise (or appears to) but it's tubular-shaped, bolted to the front tranny, and has a greenish bar that goes into the passenger side control arm assembly.

At my relatives my BIL shook the tire itself (not the truck) to reproduce the same noise.

We're thinking it's the ball joints going back (lower and/or upper)

Has anyone else had this happen?

Are we on the right track with our diagnoses?

How dangerous does this sound?

All comments, questions, answers are welcomed!
