Bed Not Level

Here's the deal... my bed isn't level, if you are lookin at my truck from the rear my bed is about a half inch higher on the passengers side than on my drivers side. I measure the gap (on level ground) between fender and wheels and there is still about a half inch difference. Bed bolts are tight, and the truck has never been wrecked. Does anyone have a clue as to what could cause this.

thanks

Re: Bed not level

How much gas is in the tank ? If your truck is like my 98 the tank is on one side. When the tank is near full it will sit a little low on that side. Measure it again when it is near empty.

I'll check. But the body moldings line up on the drivers side and don't on the passengers.

You could also try comparing the following:
1. The top of the front of the bed to the bottom line of the rear window.
2. The bottom of the tailgate to the top of the bumper

Are the lines fairly level with each other or not? My guess is that your main issue is the soft spring problem that many of us have experienced. Any variation in the bed could be exaggerated by the soft springs. It's also possible the moulding was just installed poorly on the passenger's side.

Visit a good spring shop to address the spring issue. Mine is much better after the spring work but still has some slight lean to the left that I believe is actually in the bed. It's as though the left side is tweaked downwards just a little. When I look at the bottom of the tailgate it is slightly closer to the bumper on the driver's side.

I'll have the springs checked. All the things you listed are all off by about 1/2 inch. (alignment with the bottom window and bumper) It's not a big problem, just bothers the hell outta me.

Thanks

1/2 inch seems like a lot to me. How long have you owned the truck? Another place to measure would be from the ground to the frame at several points on each side.

About a year. I asked the guy that I purchased it from if had ever been wrecked and he said no. I also got a carfax report that was clean. As far as the springs... were you refering to the leaf springs?

Find a flat level surface and measure the distance from the center of the wheel well to the ground. Measure all four wheel wells. You might find that the front driverside is higher than the front passenger side. If that is the case you could lower the front driverside by unscrewing the driver side torsion bar. If the fronts are equal side to side then the problem is with the rear spring. Unfortunatly ½ inch is within spec.

This is a common problem i think occurs from weight (gas, driver), torque from engine and bad springs. Mine did the same thing and i put a 1/2" spacer to level it out. a friend of mine had his spring rebent and they did the same thing after several months. another friend change his springs and it has lasted thus far (a year). seems to be a common problem.

Were your body lines off on the passenger side and even on the drivers side? Where can I get one of these spacers?

body lines all lined up! i made the spacer from 1/2 steel plating and drilled a hole in the center, then mounted it between the axle and the leaf spring packs.
