Post Lowering a 4x4! Please help!

Hi there. The practicality of a 4x4 in inclement weather appeals to me. However, I also liked lowered vehicles.

So, is there a way to lower my 1998 4x4 5.4 XLT, or is it plain impossible. What are the pros and cons?

If so, can u provide some links, or information on the matter?

wow now im envious

i think bell tech makes a kit but not sure

one big pro

imagine some people trying to show off and spinning their tires
you just laugh at their weak attempts
then when they say shut up or put up
you go "ok"

crank you engine up
put it in 4WDH
and smoke all 4 tires
mwahahahhaha

It's just about impossible to smoke all four tires. The purpose of 4wd is for better traction, and that is exactly what you get in 4wd. When you lock it in 4 hi, and slam the gas, you just take off, no wheel spin, not even in rain.

A drop for a 4x4. Oh well, I guess everyone has diffrent tastes. Belltech does have a drop kit fot the 4x4 F150s. On the front your suppose to use the torsion bars to give you a 1"-4" drop. The back consists of a hanger and shackel kit to give a 4" drop(or use the shackles alone for a 2" drop).

The kit only consists of the hanger and shackel kit, but it is a little pricy for the kit. I looked it up on the Summit web site and it prices for $320, but Summit is currently sold out of the kits. If you do want to try to find the kit though the kit # is BEL-3932.

As for shocks, my catalog does not mention any aftermarket shocks for a lowered 4x4 so your outta luck on that department.

modestroman,
Your not the only one!
www.wmsracing.com has a kit for the Expy. It also applies to the F150.
I had one installed on my Dad's F150 so it would fit in the garage. It worked out geat!

Hey modestroman. I sure glad someone other than me had the ***** to ask that question.

I too have a 01 SCrew, 5.4L 4x4.
And I too love the versitility of a 4x4 when needed, yet the looks of a slammed, or at least lowered truck.

One of the only reasons I got my SCrew in 4x4 is for re-sale value, and sell ability.

two years ago I sold my 2x4 F-250 Crew-Cab, w/7.4L
Yet the majority of the calls I got for it..they expected, and wanted it to be a 4x4.

I going to be installing some 18" or 20" wheels, with Low-pro tires....
This will give it a nice effect...Yet I think a couple of inches down would look even cooler?

Here's My ride...

Modestroman, I've been thinking the same thing with my 4x4. A two-to-four inch drop would be just about right for me. Potentially better handling, better gas mileage, and of course better clearance in my garage (where it just barely fits) as well as all the parking garages around my area, where I'm scraping my radio antenna all too often. That drives me nuts.

I guess my next move is to call WMS Sport Truck in Canada and price out their kit. Any other suggestions out there for a 4x4 drop?

I tossed this idea around for while. So there are a lot of us out here.

Bell Tech was the only one I found. I talked to Stillen twice about it. The first time they said the cost would be $550 approx but this included shocks. The second time they said $370 approx without the shocks and I would have to figure out what shocks to use for the lower stance now. If I was ready to order I probably could have better answer. The pricing could be slightly different, cause I don't have the paperwork here at work that I wrote it on.

The pros or cons? To lower the front you have to torque the torsion bars. This creates a stiffer ride. Stillen said it would kill the stock ride really really bad. I guess better handling is a result though, not sure. I also heard that messing with the torsion bars will make it difficult to align the wheels. Anyone else heard these things? How bad is the ride or aligning REALLY? I suppose the bump stops will need to be cut or replaced too.

I will check out WMS now(thanks *****). I'd still want to do this if I can get a decent ride quality. I think this would be a great set-up.

I *can* spin my wheels in 4x4! So far with the mods I have I can spin all 4 on dry road in 4lo and all 4 on wet roads with 4hi, from a standstill mind you and only for about a 1.5 sec before the tires bite, but I have
As for lowering your 4x4......its your money and it would definately rock if you could smoke all 4 in 4hi for a lengthy amount of time. A definate one-upper in my book. Or better yet, put an air suspension on yer truck so you can lift it up for the rough stuff and drop it for street stuff
Just a thought and my $.02

Just out of curiosity, what good does lifting up ones truck provide? Other than extra clearance for serious 4x4-ing tires and wheels, I just don't get it. For those of us who don't take their 4x4s out into the mud and dirt trails, I'm just trying to see how it could help. I see several potential practical advantages to lowering 2 - 4 inches:

1)easier to load/unload cargo from the bed
2)better handling/stability
3)better mileage
4)greater clearance in parking garages

I see one advantage to lifting:

1)ability to mount monster tires providing awesome traction in big time mud and radical four wheelin' situations

Maybe I'm missing something? Let me know.

Hey Scott,
You are just about right there buddy. I personally like lifted trucks, but what you like is what you like. There really isnt too much practicality to a lift, except better clearance and ability to fit bigger tires. I dont like the idea though of going over a big speed bump not knowing if you're going to slam down on the road or not. I know my truck wont!!

I believe you can still order the Bell Tech kit through the Online store. I just wish someone would post some pics. I have a '97 supercab 4x4 with chrome lightning wheels and '01 L taillights on it ( among other add-ons), and would love to see some pics before trying this mod just to fill the wheel wells up.
