Gears on Lifted Truck
With 35s you'll want 4.56 gears. The cost will be somewhere in the $1000-1200 ballpark. Usually about $600 an axle. The big variable is what individual shops charge you for installation. Some places are dirt cheap and others are sky high. I wouldn't let a dealership do anything like this. I'd go and find a reputable offroad or drivetrain shop. You're better off to find a shop that does things like this on a regular basis as they will typically do a better job and you'll have fewer problems down the road.
Well I think it's gonna depend on what your stock gears are as well as what kind of performance you want. I would think if you don't need too much grunt you may go 4.10s (this is what I may do in the future when I can afford the $1k it would probably cost) or I've seen others go 4.56s as well. Also, I think the 5.4 is better equipped to handle bigger tires, although the added stress on your tranny is still there.

I say go with the 4.56's. I have a 4.6L and went with 4.56's and love them. I tach about 2500RPM on the highway at about 75-80. Your speedo will still be off though but it will be fast(ie: going 50 on speedo and really going about 45). if you have a stock 3.55 rear then 4.10 would put you at stock but with the added weight of the tire it may feel less than stock. If you have 3.73 getting back to stock would require 4.30's. I say screw those gears and go with 4.56's, you will not be sorry. Take it to a pro that does this on a regulat basis. A dealer will rope you on price and I don't think that they do as good of a job. Cost on my rear was $636 cuz I needed new axel barings other wise it would have cost me $475.
Thanks, it sounds like the 4.56 is the way to go... it's a 4.6L btw and I don't want to put too much wear and tear on my transmission by driving around with the stock gears.
Also, would have to do front and rear right?

If you want to be able to use your 4X4 then yes you need to do both. The 4.56's will reduce or eliminate the extra stress on the drivetrain with the 4.56's. In my opinion it will be easier on the drivetrain due to the fact in a sense you are now running small tires due to the new gears.

I just did gears in a 2001 supercrew last month. It cost about $280 for the gears and $100 for the install kit. Thats just for the parts per rear. I have a shop in eastern pa. if you are interested in having the gears done. We do alot of lifted trucks. OK offroad in jersey is a good place also to go. We deal with them sometimes. Let me know if you have any other questions. The truck we just did was a 2001 supercrew with 13" of lift and 42" swampers. 456 is the steepest gear you can go with in those rears.
Got a website for ok offroad? I searched and saw in another thread that Kodiak was a good place to go... so that's where I just put a 100 dollar deposit on getting the gears done. They have an entire wall of pictures of lifted trucks that they have done
