Question Torsion Bar

I was wondering if anyone had a torsion bar crack on their F150? Mine broke at 38422 miles and i recently talked to a friend with the same problem. We both have 98 F150 ext cab 4x4's. To this day Ford has no recalls yet i was wondering if anyone has had this problem or know any other info on it!

I think if you do a search on this topic you will find that it is a common problem,
although it has not happened to me yet.

No recall's from Ford that I have heard.
As far as it being common,it's not a common problem. It has happened but to very few compared to how many 150's that are out there.Although it seem's the few that I have read about here have been 97 & 98's.I'll be stopping at the dealer today & I'll ask my buddy who is a part's manager/buyer for their ford dealership's how many he's heard of.

My torsion bars also broke at 22 500 miles on my 1998 Ford150 4X4 ext cab.

Ford replaced them, but claimed that they had never, never, never, heard of such a problem.

The first bar broke while my wife was driving home, and then the matching one broke while in the dealers waiting for parts.

They acted very surprised!!!

DAMN!

My right torsion bar just ********* snapped on
my 97 F-150 XLT. 33,000 miles on it I'm pissed. I was pulling into my parking space at work sunday morning and "BAM", I thought someone was shooting at me it was so loud.
Then my truck listed to the front right like the titanic. Had to have it towed to the dealer (they said they have never seen such a thing happen) but it's under warrenty and they'll fix it. What's next the engine falling out?

Question

Hey guys, is there a manufacturer of some heavy-duty torsion bars out there?? I've got a '97 approaching 27000 miles, and I would hate to have this happen. I have heard of heavy-duty torsion bars for Chevy's but I cannot remember when or where I heard this.

This is a common problem but Ford won't own up to it. Just check this website and you will find many. The same thing happened to me with my 1997 Ford F-150 4WD. Go to the posting "Angry at Ford" and read all about it.

lisicag,
How much of a common problem do you think it is ?
It seem's most were earlier 97-98 model's.
Do you think ford is blowing this off ?
Hey,you did'nt crash or anything when your bar broke? (hope not)
I know there are some issue's about this but did'nt know of it was that common.
Last truck's were 89 ,93,95,99 & 01 150's
no suspension problem's with any except the ttb in the older one's whiched sucked.
My buddy order's part's for 5 Ford dealer's & he told me he has only ordered 3 set's due to breakage.None in 2001 ( so far).

THIS IS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM.

How many can you count? It is less than 10 bars broken that I have heard of in the past year on this board.

So 1 million trucks sold, 10 cases. Hrm, huge problem! *****! sue!

The problem is is that when it does happen people are loud about it and do not like it when others dont sympathize with them about the cost of replacement.

Matt90gt,
I did'nt think that is was a common problem compared to how many F-150's that are out there.(million's I'd guess). That's why I asked these question's . I thought I was missing something. It's a mechanical thing.
I don't know of anything in the world that is perfect without a flaw or defect or a part wearing or going bad on ocassion.

I would think that maybe the bars are in the wrong truck possibly. I guess the f250LD bars are longer than the 150 units. So most of us dont have those by mistake. But say you have a 5.4 extra cab and got the v6 standard cab bars. That would definately cause handling issues, a soft ride and accelerated wear on the bars.

Also another thing to think about. Most of the bars that have broken lately on the board have about 30Kmiles on them. Wonder if worn shocks contribute to accelerated wear? Basically if the shocks are worn, the bar is doing the spring and shock job. That would definately shorten its life. Maybe I am wrong.

Matt that is a good point about the shocks, although they souldn't wear out at 30,000 mi, they can. I installed a set of F250 light duty bars in my f150 and set the ride height. They are longer and a little stronger, the main thing is you dont have to twist them up so much to get your ride height. This is a very rare problem, I have seen a few cases of them breaking but very few, we work on a lot of F series trucks and for the most part they are very good Pick ups. I always recommend a good Extended Warranty just for thse types of problems...U just never know what may go wrong...

The stock shocks are worn by the time you get the rig off the dealers lot. Think about all the time down the assembly line, the load and unloaded. Then the travel in a train or trailer. There was something like on Dateline or 20/20 a few years back about this. Basically by 20K replace them.

I've even heard at about 10k you should replace them because they are cheap...something like 9 bucks at pepboys, maybe less. I got 20k on mine....but switching to RSX's this weekend.
