Question How to Install Grease Fittings

Last weekend while installing new brake pads, I decide to remove the grease plugs and install fittings on the tie rod ends so I can lube the joints. Itried everything to get them out but couldn't. My next step is to try drilling a hole and using a bolt remover, but I'm not even sure if the plug is threaded. Heck, I'm not even sure they're removable, but every other truck I've owned was.

How do I remove the plugs?

They are non-removable. If you want the fittings you can drill a hole through the plug, tap it, and thread in the zerk fitting but it is a real P.I.T.A. Your best be is to wait until they wear out then replace them with after market units that have the fittings.

Zerk fittings have a tapered thread -- and as such are self-tapping. You must ensure that the hole you drill is of the proper size -- and that none of your chips get left inside.

Duh - now I understand why the plugs so hard to get out! Looking at some older posts, I see that Autozone sells a grease needle that you insert into the boot. Sounds like the best bet to me. The idea of drilling into suspension joints without contaminating them with metal filings just isn't gonna happen. Thanks for the help.
