Angry Broken Torsion Arm

The right side torsion arm on 98 LD 250 4x4 broke today in a parking lot! I was making a normal left hand turn when I heard what sounded like something sliding across the bed of the truck. I drove about 1/4 mile made another left hand turn in the parking lot and heard the same sound. When I checked, the torsion bar on the right side had broken completely in half near the front end. The truck only has 30k mi, but of course the warranty expired less than 2 months ago! I didn't hit anything in the parking lot and don't remember hitting anything hard in the past. When I asked the dealer they said they had seen maybe 3 break but usually during very cold weather (it was probably 50F today).

Has anybody had a similar experience? The break looked fresh from what I could see - no rust. I told the dealer I would hope Ford would cover the repair cost since it was an obvious defect. Dealer thought Ford might cover 75%. Any suggestions??

I guess I am very lucky that I wasn't driving 70 mph when it broke. Now I am concerned if the other is going to break!!

ford does have a program to pay for 70 to 80 percent of parts and labor so if they do that then its all good

I'm pretty sure that one or two years had a TSB for torsion arms breaking.
