You guys read my mind!! I am getting ready
to order a 2001 f-150 4X2 3:55 limited slip
XLT and dont need a 4X4. I want to get a body lift (not to radical) and would like to know
if I should upgrade to the 17" rims with
p265/70r OWL when I make my order? I also
want to install some nerf bars and cab lights. How high of a lift should I get?

Hey guys, slow down. Nobody took any jabs at your preference for reason for not getting a 4X4. My intent was not to hurt anyones pride. If all your pride is wrapped up in a truck, you have higher issues to deal with.

My question merely sought understanding of why you would spend the 2-4k on a body lift, wheels and shocks for a 2wd truck that does nothing but add looks when you could spend that same money for the 4X4 package and have the functionality. If you are ticked off about being in the hole on your mustang, why are you sinking a bunch of money into a 2wd truck that you won't ever get back at trade in or resale? Very few people are going to pay more money for a used, lifted 2wd truck when they can buy a 4X4 for the same or even less money.

I guess we can just write it off as preference then. Thanks for your responses, however unjustifiably rude they were.

You arent getting it.......!! First my truck is one of the larger trucks on this site and its a 4x2...To lift a 4x4 to my heigth would cost about the same as it cost to lift mine...and once you lifted the 4x4 you would still have to buy tires/rims and shocks....so that expense is shared..You still with me....
Everything is more expensive on the 4x4...extended warranty, original price, gas..up keep..I DONT NEED 4X4...I have had 3 in the past and used it about as many times..
As far as getting a good price for my truck, I have had offers that would pay for all my upgrades, but she aint for sale...
Everyday I drive my truck I get looks and people giving her compliments..What can I say they love FORDS, and they love them lifted..me too.....
Also if you ask the guys with 4x4s, after they do the work to them most of them dont trash them anymore either...parts break and they are expensive.....DAVE

2000,

Look at my original reply, look at Dave's, look at Robertos... not hostile or rude, just answering your questions honestly. If it's your contention that a basic 4x4 off the lot is ANYTHING like some of the modified 4x2's owned by some of the members on this sight, take another look! It is a matter of choice, like we've stated and you agreed. If you don't need 4x4, why buy it? Even if I did want and buy the 4x4, I'd still be modifying it to get the look I like, plain & simple.

Any chance you might be related to the kid who stirred up all the commotion around here a while back when he posted a note comparing F150s and Tundras???

Cool

2000F150Fun,

...and here's a legitimate answer. There are those of us who like the off-road height, stance and look but don't really do a lot of SERIOUS off-roading. Accordingly, we don't really need the 4x4! Nor do we want to pay the increased price for the trucks, which really need upgrades right off the lot anyway, not to mention the higher insurance premiums. We'd prefer to spend the money for the options and upgrades we want rather than buy a 4x4 package that we probably don't need, only to have to spend more $$ on top of that to get the good tires, wheels, and other goodies.

To sum it up, 4x4 is great if you need it! If you don't, it's waste of money! Just my opinion...

Now what I don't understand is buying a 4X4 and making a low-rider out of it!

Exclamation

2000, It's hard not to take that as an insult, my original comment was going to be F#&*YOU!!! but I'm getting the feeling that you really dont understand. So I am going to take a deep breath and try to explain it for you. Back when I purchased this truck I had a red 94 mustang convertable that I had owned for 6 months. In that time the motor blew up and was replaced. 2 speeding tickets, 1 deer, 2 not at fault accidents, and the tranny was getting ready to go as well. Can we say LEMON/BAD OMEN? I was still paying for this peice (and feel like I still am) so I decided to cut my losses and get out from under it. I took a SIX THOUSAND DOLLAR hit on that peice of ***** that was conveiently tacted on to the top of my truck. So in answer to your question as to why I didnt get a 4x4. OK I COULD NOT AFFORD IT! Why do I want to raise to a 4x4 height? I never said I did, I just want to level it off, and half of the raised 4x2's are BIGGER than the stock 4x4's. If you want to think like that then even if we had 4x4's we would still be raising them too. I hope this answers your question and I'm sorry if it's a bit harsh, but your taking stabs at MY pride. Jeff

Boy you can feel the love in here.
Lets keep this simple If you need a 4x4 you probably bought one.If you don't need a 4x4 you probably bought a 4x2.What you do to it after that is all a personal choice.Lifted, lowered, or stock height they still are the best looking trucks out there.
One more thing, there are actually places that the 4x2 will do better in than the 4x4.They do have greater ground clearance up front(after a lift). There is no differential to get in the way.

Let's just get the point across....when I got my truck i didn't have the money for a 4x4 or a v-8...hence i didnt get either. I needed a car so I got what I could. When i finally did get some money i spent 1200 for a body lift and tires and Im just as big as any 4x4 ORP. I got 3000 dollars off for buying a v6 and less another 2000 for not getting 4x4. I got what i could and i am happy. I buy what i can when I can and this is what I have and I am both happy and proud...its just annoying when some guy comes on this board and makes fun of everyguy who didnt have the cash in the first place to buy something bigger. If i had the extra 5k i woulda gotten one. But guess what I didnt so I am making due with what I got (and its great) so ya can just go to H*ll if you think differently.

Wink

Not making fun of anyones truck and certainly was not intending to belittle anyone either. Sorry now that I even asked such a straight forward and honest question. Thought that is what these boards were for.

As for going to hell, sorry, but I am a Christian man. There is no chance I am going to hell.

2000:
No offense intended. This passion in whatever we do is what makes America great.
Now, go to the other side of the room and ask the lowrider crowd why would they lower their F150's....hehehe...
Just kidding.

well, I never thought about it that way, but I guess you are right. But I never liked the low riders either. Just can't see the purpose. But, as someone said, it is just preference I guess.

I do like the Lightning, but it is low profile from stock and has a whole different purpose than regular trucks, raised trucks, or lowered trucks.

I have to admit, the 2wd raised trucks look really good. I would not be able to tell it wasn't 4X4 unless I looked for the front drive axle.
