Has anyone had the ford fix to the california rolls??

Well I took my truck in yesterday to get an oil change and mentioned how much I hate how the back jitters up and down the the freeway. My service advisor said there was something they would do and it would be covered under warrenty if "I am concerned about my safety". Otherwise there would be a fee. Since im VERY conserned about my safety I'm looking into getting it fixed. What they do is weld a heavy tube to the inside of the bumper and its just basically weight in the back to help keep the chop down. This seems logical since when I have my boat hitched up it doesnt do it, so I'm considering doing it. Has anyone done this and if so how was it and was it worth it?

Are you driving the same speed with the boat hooked up as when not?

There is a stretch of highway here that was poorly built.
At 65-70 it is as smooth as other roads but at 55-60(due to traffic) my truck has an annoying up and down 'bucking'.

Also, I have the short wheelbase. It would seem that a supercab/supercrew would behave differently at specified speeds on a given stretch of 'bad' road.

If weight is all they are providing, it seems you could do this yourself with some sandbags. Who knows, you might move away from there some day to an environment that breeds better road building contractors.

it does it anywhere from 50mph - 70mph, and yes sandbags is a cheap fix, but this is cleaner and free. My friend has the 8' bed in supercab and it doesnt do it at all! that extra 18 inches of wheelbase helps a lot, but even with my sb supercab it gets really rough sometimes. Im not sure if im going to do it, just trying to get some opinions about it first.

So, where'd this whole idea come from? Maybe this is the annoying shake/vibration that I've also noticed. I did not know it had a name or a fix.

Well my service advisor called it the california roll and so do a bunch of the guys at all the dealers around here because he says he has over a dozon people a week bitch about it and apparently ford knows about it other wise they wouldnt have a fix for it. I knew a lot of people had the problem, but didnt know it had a name or a fix, I know its not going to fix it all the way, but it helps suposively....

That has gone away since I put on Rancho RS9000x shocks and Michelin tires on my Screw. I was following an 01 Screw on the way home today and it did the California roll in front of me, and I thought to myslelf, how much I hated that when mine did it.

I don't know which made the difference, the shocks or the tires, or both?

There is also something called the velvet ride shackles that act like there is weight in the bed.

sdf150,
My 98 s'cab and 01 screw both had the bounce (these *****ty roads), but my L does not have it. I think the shorter wheelbase helps as well as the longer ones.
I notice you bought your truck at EC Ford. Who was your salesman? Just curious. I talked to Terry Campbell for both the screw and L.

My truck did the roll with the stock suspension. With the lift no roll at any speed!

Raoul,

This is hilarious...

1999 Ford F150 Lariat RegCab 2WD shortbed 5.4L 3.55LS Towpkg Line-X(260hp)
1995 Ford Windstar LX Loaded(155hp)
1987 SeaRay Seville Cuddy 4.3L I/O(175hp)
1986 Murray Riding Mower w/Bagger(12hp)
2002 Murray Push Mower (6.0hp)
1985 Sears Contractor Wheelbarrow Line-X (1rp)

sdf150guy,

Welding seems a little... non-reversable. I'd start by throwing some sand bags in the back corners and see how much it helps, until I got the urge to buy some new shocks.

I would stay away from the ford fix. I don't have that problem with a supercab. I would try something else that is not so.., how should I put this.., permanent. There is a lot of extra room down there and I am sure that you can find some place to put a little extra weight under the bed so you don't have to look at it every day. When you tow your boat then you can take out the extra weight.

You are not alone. There is a section of road here that makes, both of my Ford do that same thing. My 01 4x4 w/Goodyear AT/S @ 40 PSI was much worse than my 03 FX4 w/ stock Goodyears. I believe that the 03 has stiffer shocks than the 01 had. If you were to install better shocks you might be able to improve on this problem. Just my $.02

I have an 02 Screw and it bounces like crazy on most of the freeways here. I was thinking about buying a kidney belt. Good old Caltrans once again lives up to its reputation. Thank the engineering (or lack thereof) for that one. I'm glad Ford is willing to address it (so it seems) although welding some weight into the back of my truck isn't something I'm particularly excited about. I think I'm going to try the RS9000 idea first.

When/if you get it done please post results.
