Front-end Alignment
Got a 98 F-150 4X4. Front-end needs aligned. The mechanic said he can order the camber cam kits and install them both and align the truck for $165.00. My aching

That doesn't sound that bad.
I put springs on my 2x4, and purchased the camber/caster adjusters(like washers). Installed them my self and had the alignment done afterwards.
The guy may even charge less.

It is a washer that has half circle hole offcenter in it that allows adjustment of the camber by rotating a bolt on the rear portion of the upper control arm, and another one on the front portion that adjusts the caster also.

MKTRUCK has a good description here. Ford built the trucks without the eccentric parts, built them with shim plates that are selected. Just guessing that a computer setup in the factory measures and tells the operator what color stripe of alignment shim to use for each truck coming down the line. This would leave out the operation of manually twisting bolts and checking, twisting more/less, rechecking, etc. etc., quicker and cheaper.
Of course, we would rather have all the eccentric parts in there when they come from the factory. With the shims in there, you can't just "touch up" caster or camber yourself, because you don't have a movable starting point. Taking the shims out and putting the adjustable parts in means a complete alignment from scratch. Plus the cost of the correct parts.

You should always call around for more quotes on an alignment. A second opinion is always good.

I think my cam kit was $50 a side or $100, I think. $50 for the alignment with a 6 month free realignment at NTB. $150 + tax sounds about right. Good luck!
