Rancho Shock Problem
I just finished the install of 4 Rancho RSX shocks on my 98 F-250 light duty 4x4. The Rancho book is wrong and the rear shocks don't fit right. The bushing on the bottom of the shocks is 12mm and the bolt off the truck is 9/16 (too big to go through the shock). I double checked the Rancho book at another parts store regarding sizes and Rancho simply has it wrong. I checked the Edelbrock shocks for my truck and they have the bigger (right sized) hole in the bushing. The mechanic set me up with two 12mm bolts and I was able to install them, but I'm a bit worried about the smaller bolt moving in the bracket on the truck - I looked for a sleeve that would go around the bolt, but couldn't find any that were 9/16 outside diameter. I wanted to just return them and get the Edelbrocks, but the mechanic talked me into keeping the RSX's (which were much less expensive) and going with the smaller bolts. Also - I already had the RSX's on the front and he didn't think it would be a good idea to mix shocks on front and rear. He said that they use the 12mm bolts on all the Rancho's they install on Ford F250's since they are made with the wrong size bushing. Has anyone else had this same problem - does the shock work o.k. on the smaller bolt? It looks fine on the truck and it's nice and tight - meaning the 12mm bolt fits perfectly in the shock bushing and the bolt doesn't move in the bracket on the truck).
I don't think I've been this sore in a long time - those back shocks are a bitch to get off! (I don't have any power tools). The shocks seem to be stiffer than the OEM shocks and a much better ride overall. My factory shocks had 39000 miles on them and the bushings were almost flat - glad I replaced them - but next time I'm going to pay $8 a shock to have it done - it's well worth it.
