Question Getting Bilstein Shocks! What Else Do I Need?

Ok I am planning on getting some Bilstein shocks to replace my old factory shocks. I need new shocks bad and I figure I might as well just get the good stuff

Anyways I know I need 4 shocks. But what else will I need? Are there any bushings or anyhting that should be replaced at the same time or are they just a bolt-on affair? What all do I need besides the shocks?

Thanks!

New bushings should come with the shocks. They will probably be much stiffer rubber or made of urethane. A big part of why the aftermarket shocks reduce body roll is because of the stiffer bushings. Shocks are an easy bolt on, everything you need is in the box.

How about a set of Addco sway bars? Take advantage of the new shocks and Pirellis by flattening out the handling a bit.

Cool

Darn you guys are gonna cause me to go broke. I like the Bilsteins and Swaybar idea.

Where might I find some ADDCO swaybars? And do I need them for front & rear?

Thanks

Question

Dirt Bike Dave, do you have any pictures of your truck?

Addco's site is http://www.addco.net/
Always do sway bars in pairs. If you stiffen just the front the truck will understeer (push) even more than it does now. If you stiffen just the rear it will tend to oversteer (get loose) more than you want it to. Changing both bars to a slightly stiffer front plus a rear will take out just a little of the push you now have and get rid of a whole lot of body roll. Get the optional urethane bushings, they're worth it.

Joshman - no, I haven't taken any digital pictures of my truck. Maybe I'll borrow my dad's digital camera and take a few shots. I think it is a good color combo (my wife helped be pick), but it is all stock as far as paint & ride height. Around these parts, I occassioinally see the same colors, so it must be a pretty popular choice.

In reply to the Bilsteins. Just put a set on my 1999 F250 4X4 (Light Duty). They are fantastic! Way better ride, much easier to drive (control/handling) - not too stiff. Use to have KYBs on a different truck which seemed stiffer.

Installation (01/23/00): I installed the Bilsteins with the provided bushings - upper & lower doughnuts for the top (threaded) end. Ended up taking off the provided bushings and went with (reused) the stock Ford Bushings. Here's why: The Ford Bushings fit much much better in the top mounting holes - both front & rear. The Bilstein bushings seemed to "slip into" the large mounting holes in the rear causing the top and bottom metal bushing compression plates (the large washers that sandwich the bushings on both sides of the frame) bottom out on the frame.

Recommend re-using (or get new) the ford bushings. The lower piece of the upper bushing set has a raised cone that fits into the top cupped piece (both front & rear) - a much better design that the Bilstein design.

NOTE: The bottom Ford bushing just slides off the shock. Use the Bilstein washer on the bottom.

The top Ford bushing has the nut/washer as a single piece. No need to use the Bilstein washer here. The nut threads are identical for the Ford shock & Bilsteins - the Ford top piece (washer/bushing) threads onto the Bilstein.
