air suspension vs helper springs?
air suspension vs helper springs?
Can anyone advise me as the advantages/disadvantages of installing an air suspension (inflatable) vs helper springs (progressive). I have a 2000 F150 with tow package, and tow a loaded horse trailer weighing about 5k lbs. Want to keep the front end down a little when towing. The helper springs are less expensive, and since they deform with the load I assume the unloaded ride wont be rougher than it is now, so I'm leaning that way, but I really dont know a lot about either system. I'm getting conflicting advice from the local shops which install the systems (no surprise there!)
I installed the progressive helwig springs on my '99 and was happy with the performance. I even noticed the bonus of better cornering. The problem I found was that they tended to rattle over washboard roads. I improved it by putting some rtv in some of the attachment points. It was very nice to be able to put a larger load on the rear without having it sag excessively. I would recomend them based on my experience. They are a little cheaper and you can easily install them yourself. Make sure you also keep your tire pressure up when you do put some extra load on the rear axle. I haven't done anything on my new truck yet, but I am thinking about putting a set on again.
