Gas Gauge Reading - Minor Problem

I thought I might just mention this to the group . . .

When I get down to a quarter of a tank or so and I park on my steep driveway, when I go to leave in the morning the gas gauge reads empty and the Low Fuel Warning lights come on.

All I have to do is get to a place that is relatively level, turn off the key, and then turn the key back on and the gas gauge will read correctly again.

Just thought I would mention it. The first time I saw that I thought I was very close to being out of gas . . . not true.

That's Ford for you. Not sure why the sensor in the tank does that. It appears to only read how much is in the tank at start up and then monitors as the gas level goes down. It won't reflect additional gas you put in though. Folks have an 01 Expedition and it works the same way as our 03 S'Crew. When it's darn cold here in Minnesota or North Dakota, we'll leave the vehicle running when stopping for gas. (Please nobody tell me the dangers of this.) These vehicles are the only ones I've ever seen where the gas guage doesn't slowly show the tank being filled while the new gas is being pumped into the tank. You have to shut the vehicle off and restart for the guage to read the new level. No biggie but still different than usual.

the gauge will correct

The gauge will correct itself if you fuel the vehicle while running, but it takes awhile. I think that it's mentioned in the owners manual.

Fords gas guages have sucked for sometime now. They are absolutly horbile when it comes to accuracy. But you do get used to how much gas you have so I guess thats all that counts....

Yea Ford rocks..... 05 5.4 crew here with the same bullshizziot fuel gauge problem 2,500 miles on it done it from day one.... Dropped it off at the dealer and they said that ford has a bullitin out saying to do NOTHING... So the service people said that they "would keep an eye out and if something changed they would call me" Ford blows.. my last f150 which was 99 had the fading odometer seems they can never get it all right....

Don't know what all the fuss is here... When you are parked on an incline the fuel moves to the back of the tank - away from the float - and the gauge reads low. Start driving and the gauge will pick back up. I had a vehicle where the sender and gauge were more sensitive and it drove me nuts watching the thing swing between empty and full as started and stopped and went around corners. I guess I have the only functional gauge here.

The gauge is controlled from the dash microprocessor and does not update the level on a continious full time basis. There is timing involved plus restarting cycles.
There's hardly any tank sender that will tell the correct fuel on a steep incline old style or new.

What bothers me is that it takes 100 miles to move off of FULL and then the next 180 - 200 miles are used up from just off of FULL to near EMPTY. Not exactly a linear gauge is it?

I'm used to it now and it isn't a big deal.

Don't be so quick to knock the Ford truck fuel gauges. The Chevy truck gauges are the horrible ones. At my shop we have replace so many of the chevy tank units and they aren't cheap $400+ for the pump module. Plus, draining and removing the fuel tank.
