Front Tire Problems
In the last 5000 miles our Supercrew has started to tear up the left front tire. It makes a thumping noise when turning to the right at 20-45mph. We have the Goodyear RTS. It has been in for service two times for this problem. The service rep keeps going on about its the tires. My respones then is the right side is broken cause it is not showing any wear or making thumping noise.
We have noticed that the first block of tread on the outside is cupping really bad. This is only happening on the front left side of the truck.
The truck has 30k. The tires have been rotated at every other oil change.
Anyone have this problem?????????
Thanks:

Alignment
Happened to me and I had the alignment checked and it was way out. Had the tires balanced with a road variance balancer (expensive) and no problems since. Friend of mine just had the same problem with his screw.
Despite regular balancing and alignment I had my Goodyears replaced at about 33k. Basically they all started getting feathered or saw-toothed on the outside edges and I lost some chunks out of the edge.
I think the tires stink.
Switched to Michelin which seem to be doing a lot better.

The Goodyear RT/S tires SUCK!!!!
Can't say it any plainer. But it does sound like your alignment is off or a bad shock as mentioned above.
Rotation has nothing to do with it as just 1 tires is prematurly wearing unless that tire has a defect of some sort.
Do yourself a favor and get diffrent tires to begin with, get and alignment, and new shocks (if they need replaced).
There are tons of tire options out there and for the most part OEM tires are reallllllyyyy bad...

Ok, a little more info and hope that I am not going to have any problems. I have shaking in the truck approx 35 and then again at 45MPH. It is noticible driving but not if riding. To me it seems to be in the front end. Dealer indicated that there was a problem with the tires and replace 2 of the 4. Interestingly enough, they removed the front tires, moved the rear tires to the front, and put the new tires on the rear. Still have the problem but to a lesser extent. The dealership indicated that the tires were out of round and under warranty. These are Goodyear Wrangler RT/S. Any help out there???
I agree that the 17" RTS goodyears suck. On my '01, a combination of two dealerships put on a total of 8 different replacement tires (6 under warranty) over a period of about a year before giving up. All of the tires took a helluva lot of weight before they would spin balance out OK, but even so would still have subtle vibration at 65-75 mph. First dealership gave up (said there was no problem), second dealer eventually gave up. It wasn't until I went to a "Just Tires" store that they actually put them on a road force balancer and saw that 3 of the 4 on the truck were out of spec and replaced them for free. Finally had a "good" set of goodyears just before I got rid of the truck. Take a look around at the new trucks on the lot - they don't generally take a lot of balance weight. Hmmm... I started to speculate that maybe the ford dealerships got the blemished tires (or ones that didn't quite meet factory standards.)
Anyway, the net results for me are:
1. I won't ever buy tires or even have any kind of tire-related work done by a dealership again.
2. I will never ever ever buy goodyear RTS tires again.

Thanks lots! I hadn't even thought about taking the truck to a true "tire" store to make sure that the tires are the problem. My Screw is scheduled to go back to the dealer but I may have to reconsider. I will keep you posted on any resolution to help others out there.
Thanks Guys,
Well, The truck has had 4 alignments, and I took the shocks to a local Race shop and put on a shock dyno. The shocks are in great shape for 31K.
I think it is a true tire problem. The tires suck, or something is wrong with the truck. All four tires show wear on the edges(feathering)
but the left front tire is the worst.
Let me toss this at you guys.
We drive about 60miles oneway, at about 70mhp. Do you think something is wearing out in the front end that only takes place at high speed. Something flexing or shifting????? The alignments all were within specs.
Maybe the tires just suck???
Thanks

I've got 7500 miles on my '02 SCrew, it has been a mix of highway and local mileage. The front Goodyears are already feathering at the outside edges. According to an independent alignment shop the tires are aligned and balanced. I think it's the tires, the Goodyears on my '97 did the same thing. I replaced them with Michelins, then later Uniroyals, never had a problem with either set.
By the way - when I was at the Just Tires store, they said the goodyears would do fine if you rotated them no less than every 4k miles. I had been rotating them every 6k and they were still junk so I dunno.
Also - if you really want to isolate it to the tires, you MUST find a shop with a road force machine. I witnessed with my own eyes the tires would zero balance perfectly on a regular machine, but took the truck across town to a shop with the road force machine which said the tire was slightly out of balance as well as out of round to the point of being defective. You could see the tread "wiggle" if you watched the tire spin on either machine.

ACAPilot,
I know it’s really irritating, but your best solution is to bite the bullet, put a new set of high-quality tires on the truck and get rid of the Goodyears. You would hope that the tires would wear evenly and properly, but the reality is that OEM tires are of the lowest quality available.
I had a buddy with an expy that had the same sort of problems with those tires, and after getting new rubber the issue was solved and has not returned. I can recommend Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO’s from personal experience--they’re the best tires I’ve ever owned. That said, any good quality tire should cure the problem though--I hear very good things about Michelin as well. Good luck.
P.S. What are you driving for ACA? RJ, 328, or a Junkstream?

the only thing that commonly wears out is the idler arm (on 4x4s) this will usually start to show chopping on the rt tire, check for vertical movement at idler arm, more noticeable with the wheels of the ground, I have seen them severely worn out on vehicles with as little as 9000 miles, then you said all 4 tires showing wear on edges, that is probably tire pressure related, i run mine at 35-36 psi
the tires are crap. Check one of you previous alignment readings specs should be -0.1 camber, -.5 caster split and 0.10 toe, i run about -.3 camber and 0.20 toe and have had good results, also
check your torsion bars (4x4) if they are adjusted too tight on side you can have abnormal tire wear, check that the truck is level side to side and appears slightly lower in the frt
