Question box covers?

First off I'd like to say hey to everyone, this site is really cool and informative for me, especially since I just bought my first ford Screw.... swapped a 2000 chevy for an '02 screw, and I love it so far.

My question is about fiberglass tonneau covers. What is a good brand and style to buy?

I'd like to put one on before the snow comes and fills the box on me. I've heard A.R.E are good, but cost wise are the most expensive. Any suggestions?
thnxs.

First off, welcome to the forum, shadow-xlt!

I have the ARE and love it. There are alot of good covers out there. It depends on what style you like more than anything.

One other thing to think about when picking a tonneau:
Some of them won't cover the plastic bedrail caps on your truck when closed (the ARE does and so do a few others).

If you search through the "Other Aftermarket" threads, you will find more than enough info on tonneau covers to keep you busy reading for a while.

Good Luck!

I can't advise you on what to buy, but I can advise you on what NOT to buy. I just traded my '99 SC on a '01 Screw that had a LowRider brand fiberglass cover on it. It doesn't seem to fit quite right. The rails that clamp onto the truck's bedrail caps does not fit level and does not match the curve of the bed caps. It did not close properly when I bought the truck. I finally had time today to mess around with it and finally, after some afro-engineering, got it to work good. Time will tell if it is a good fix or not.

A fiberglass cover is something that I would have never bought myself, but it was on the truck when I bought it, but it really makes the truck look good. So I will leave it on until it becomes a nuisance. If it hinders me from carrying stuff enough, it will be for sale.

Hope you find the cover that is right for you.

Robdude30....very nice looking truck. Red Rules!
But you may need to change your sig....unless the pics in your gallery are fooling me, your truck's color is called "Bright Red", not torreador red. Your truck's pics look just the same as mine, and my last one. Both window stickers called the paint "Bright Red"

Thanks, RebelYell. No, it is really Toreador Red. The pics were taken after a good coat or two of wax in full sun. If you look close, you can see all the reflections from the background.

SNUG LID

Go look at my Photos at Yahoo!

So far, Snuglid id THE ONLY company to have their lids
follow the contour of the rear of the cab.

Look at the photos, I hope you understand what I mean.
Standing at the side of the cab rear door, the snug lid does
not go straight across the cab back, it wraps around for a finer finish look.

UnderCover! $589 installed. Weighs like 55lbs, so it's easy to remove by yourself.

Lightbulb

I just had another thought, shadow-xlt. Check out the ******** 2000 model (may be x2000 or something like that). I like the looks of it but don't know anything about it.

I was looking at the A.R.E. cover, it fits the box well, and seems to be the best for weather tight. I checked out other brands and they don't compare.

To me, a cover has to look good, be weather tight, and cover the plastic bed caps. The only covers I've seen that fit these requirements are the A.R.E, the Snuglid, and ********.

I personally like the thin, flat look, which eliminates the A.R.E.

So, I would choose one of the others, with my personal preference being the Snuglid!

Just my .02.

I finally (!) got a gallery created. Check out my Tri-glas tonneau photos there. I apologize in advance for the so-so picture quality. I'm hoping Santa is reading this and brings me a new camera for X-mas so I can reshoot.

Thanks guys.

I got the lid at:

Alty Camper Tops & Pickup Accessories
6715 Johnston St.
Lafayette, LA
phone (337) 984-2223

Alty's ordered it from the Tri-glas plant in Alabama and did the installation. The factory paint match was done at Tri-glas before shipping. Another option was to take delivery and do the paint at a local body shop under Alty's supervision and volume price discount. The cost was almost exactly the same either way.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I recall the total price being $695 plus tax. I believe that broke down to about $545 for the lid, $100 for the paint match, and $50 for the cleanup and installation.

Installation and removal looks simple enough, since the lid just clamps to the Screw bed rails with four screw clamps. It is definately a two person job -- one on each side of the truck to prevent any accidental slipping and scratching. One would also need to take care to not position it too far forward to avoid scratching the cab and to not allow the downward travel to be too large to prevent scratching of the bed. There are simple adjustment screws for this.

Here's a link to the Tri-glas website:
