Chevron, Mobil or ?

My 2001 SuperCrew has been running on Mobil regular for a year now. Unfortunately, my gas mileage has dropped somewhat (310 to 270 a tank full) even though the fuel injectors, filters, and tire pressure have been checked and monitored by both the dealer and myself. I'm wondering if maybe I should switch gasolines just to see if it makes a difference. Is there any reason to do this or are gasolines pretty much the same breed these days?

Thanks,
Jon

Oh, one thing... I've used Castrol 5W20 every 3000 miles since the first oil change. MotorCraft is too hard to find here in CA! Could that be the culprit?

Mike Troyer over in the Computer Chips Forum has some very strong opinions about brand name gasoline’s and their energy content. I don't believe (don't quote me on this) he thinks very much of Mobil/Exxon fuel and its energy content. You might want to do a search in that forum or better yet, give him a call, you don't have to be buying something from him for him to be helpful.

Yes, the fuel definitely makes a difference. I have experimented with different brands down here in Fl. and have found as much as 1.2 MPG difference.
Typically, I would use the same station, same brand of gas and run a minimum of 4 full tanks before taking a final reading. And during this time, I was careful to keep the driving style as siimilar as possible.

I found that:
Worst: Texaco Premium ~12.6 - 13.8 MPG

Best: Gulf Premium ~ 14.8 - 15.2 (Cumberland Farms )
Sunoco Premium ~ 15.0 - 16.8 ( Coastal )

These were with my '01 Screw. I have found that my '02 gets 1 - 2 MPG better right out of the box. Same motor, tire, gear combo.
The '02 is getting 16.2 - 17.5 depending on driver mood.

I just chipped and air-modded (is that a word ?), so we'll have to see what that does to the MPG. I am going to R&R the exhaust next, so that may add to the equation.

Also, winter and summer gas formulations will make your MPG and power fluctuate quite a bit.

Just my .02 chatter. But I stick with the good fuel and it seems to work for me.

Since you are located on the West Coast you can't compare gas brands to any where else. I live in San Diego and many say, including Mike Troyer in the Super Chips forum (haven't tested myslef) that the Cheveron (what I use) has the most energy in it and that Texeco has the best gas mileage (never used it) Arco is just plain crap and as far as the other gases, don't know.

I have gotten almost 18MPG in my 4x4 SCREW on a trip to LA. Also I must say I am a lead foot, but even with my lead footedness, I still get about 14MPG consistanly around town. All I use it the Cheveron 91.

Thanks for the info... It looks like Mike Troyer has a lot to say about this subject. I did a search but couldn't find the data you're talking about. Could any of you direct me to the thread?

Thanks,
Jon

Does anyone have any idea on what brand of gasoline is good to use in the East Coast? I am in PA and have been using Mobil. Although, my truck is most likely still to new to tell.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am NOT chipped or air modded etc... LOL

Jim
