Watch that Spare Tire!!

Well, after 52K miles - the tires on my 2001 Supercrew were looking kinda shabby - apparently the Camber was out enough to cause some serious inside wear down to the steel belts.

Firstly 52K miles is good enough for me - and I really like the BF Goodrich tires. So I started calling around town - and since they are 275/60-17's - hard to find. Everyone wanted to order them and charge me 160 bones a piece. Forget that....

I found them on the web for 95 apiece. Well being the smart (and cheap) guy I am, I thought - I'll just buy three and use the spare for the fourth tire (Since it has never been used).

Well to make a long story short, when I removed the spare from under the truck, it apparently has rubbed against the bed for about 2 years to the point where there are 6 big indentions in the sidewalls. Still useable - but ugly.

I would suggest anyone with a supercrew lower the spare tire and put something between the rubber and the frame to keep it from getting ruined.

I went ahead and had it mounted and ordered another.

Another thing - the cheap chrome on the wheel covers is screwed up underneath the balancing weights. Quality is job 1 - yeah right. The cheap chrome on these wheels is thinner than a chrome plated Hotwheel.

If your buying a new supercrew - do yourself a favor and get a king ranch - or at least alloy wheels.

The King Ranch Seats are quality pieces - the leather lariat seats are el cheapo.

Thanks for the good advice on the spare tire. However, in the future maybe you could watch the language. Maybe you're a little hot under the collar that you had a stroke of bad luck with the spare but try to maintain the family forum atmosphere.

Chris,

Looks like rexwl had the chance to edit his post before you wrote yours. There was some language and vulgarity that may have been inappropriate. Since I see "last edited....." at the bottom of his post, I guess he cleaned it up before you could read it. Thus, you have no idea what I was referring to.

Anyway, he made the right call.

Too me a spare is a spare, I really don't care what it looks like. My only concern is after say 4 years of sitting there rubbing around would that actaully damage the tire or weaken the sidewall?

Spare is a Spare

Yeah I actually used the word AS* several times in my original post which apparently offended someone. We need to keep AS* out of any conversation of Spare Tires for Supercrews cause you never know how many children out there have Supercrews - and are reading this post as opposed to surfing for pornography, and atomic bomb construction manuals - therefore I cleaned it up for the good of humanity.

On the Spare Tire Issue - your Original Spare is actually a full size duplicate of what came on your truck and on mine those retail for about $160.00 a piece.

If you protect it from damage - the first time you change your tires out, you will only have to buy 3 - in order to put 4 new ones on the ground. Then you can put one of your still useable old tires on the spare wheel.

Saves you about $160.00 the first time around.

Just a suggestion.

REXWL,

I just recently had to replace one of my Goodrichs because of 5/8" bolt puncture. No fix. All the shop could find was a Goodyear for $115 so I decided to put the GY up as a spare and switch with the original Goodrich spare.
I did notice the indentations and almost reconsidered but since my SCrew is only five months old, they weren't too deep yet. I can understand after a couple years the spare would be permanently marked.

That explains it, I saw the assembly line manual for spare tire installation some years back.... it had an optional cushion foam composite part with an asterisk.. it was puzzling.... thre foot note was

I have the same indentations on my spare with less than 8000 moles on the clock. I think I'll cut a circular piece of 1/4 plywood to act as a buffer.

That would be

www.onlinetires.com

I got them in 3 days - Shipping was about 20 a tire. Total of about 115.00 a tire delivered to my door.

Cost me 10.00 a piece to get them mounted and balanced locally.

Overall saved about 40.00 per tire.
