Shims needed when lowering rear 2"?
When I get my 2WD 03 Crew, I want to lower the rear 2" to level it's appearance out. I was told that I would need shims for a one piece shaft and wouldn't need shims for a two piece shaft. Do the Crew's have one or two piece drive shafts?
Thanks, Jim
Thanks, Jim
aren't their driveshafts steel?
anyway, i haven't heard of anybody needing shims for a 2" rear drop. So you should probably be fine. I just lowered my HD 2" and its the same lenght as your screw, so i wouldn't worry.
but i'm not saying that its a definate

It depends how you lower it. If you use the easiest way of putting in 2" drop shackles, then you do not need shims. I have a 2001 screw KR that I lowered the rear 2" with drop shackles, and have had no problems at all with it.
Thanks for all the responses guys, I appreciate it. I am planning on using 2" drop shackles. I may just have a shop do it, I was quoted $150 out the door. Then I won't have to worry about the shims, the shop should know and if it's not right, I can always take it back.

Its not that hard to do it yourself if you have a couple jack stands and a jack. Just put the frame on stands so the wheels are barely off the ground, jack up the rear axle a little to take the tension off. Take off 2 bolts on each side, put in the new shackles, put bolts back in, and lower the truck again. Took me about 10 minutes a side after the truck was in teh air. Pretty easy mod, and it will save you 100 bucks too

When I did mine I took a 2 foot level and set it on the flat part of the rear end housing and drew a line on my drive shaft, with the truck sitting on all four tires and level ground. I then installed the shackles and put the tires back on and let the truck back down, then I crawled back under it and put the level back on the rear end differential and checked the line I made previously, it was off by more than a half an inch so I raised the truck back up and took the u-bolts off the rear end and turned the factory shims 180 degrees, put it all back together and it was about an 1/8 inch out then. I have not noticed any vibration yet and I have almost 34,000 miles on it. With all that it only took and hour and a half and I took my time. Hope this helps and sorry for the long post.
