Future Supercrew Owner

Hey all,

I'm on the verge of purchasing my first new car, well actually its a truck .. It will be a supercrew as you may have already guessed, I have a few questions for you all.. I've done most of the research already but some things are left unanswered and are mostly opinion....

The truck I'm looking to get is the smaller v8, the 4.6L, I'm not really going to use this truck for towing or doing any heavy hauling, its more going to be my street rod than anything else...
Would you all recommend upgrading the 5.4L none the less?

Also, I've always liked the way a lowered car/truck looks, I'm not for sure but are the Harley Davidson editions lowered stock?(I'm trying to figure out what to negotiate at the dealer.. suspension maybe?!) If this suspension setup isnt available, I'm sure aftermarket there are, but I really want a soft comfortable stock ride,, would an aftermarket suspension produce that much more of a rough ride?

Lastly, and this is mostly opinion based, but what would you all think of putting the Harley Wheels on a non harley truck, think that would look wrong?

P.S. Anyone from mexico? I am, I dont know if you all were aware of this or not, but these trucks (f150s) are called "Lobos" over in mexico, i'm getting the emblems shipped over for it as soon as its mine..

Any dealer advice before I go purchase, on getting upgrades, the best deal etc..?

Thanks a million everyone,

Mike

Hi Mike

I do not plan on any heavy towing either but I ordered my KR 4x4 with the 5.4 I am glad I did.

My opinion about the wheels is if you like them then put them on your truck. Ask around first to see how it will affect your ride.

As for prices I used Edmunds.com and a few others to find out what the dealer cost was for the truck I wanted and how I wanted it equiped.

Good luck,

Joe

I have a 01 4x2 with a 5.4. Only tow once a month at most, none the less I low the 5.4. Money well spent for yoursel ftoday, and at resale time.

Look at a power rear slider. I am remiss that I did not do this.
Don't know if you are doing a 4x2 or 4x4, but look at the signal mirror, they are very useful. I put Muth signal mirrors in mine, but the stock one with the signal in the edge seems to offer a wider blind spot signal path. If you get a non Lariat 4x2, the stock is chrome mirrors, no signal.
Look at the Grille, again if it is a 2wd, non latiat. This is a Chrome surround, with a butt ugly 3 bar egg crate. I just got a new L grille installed yesterday, taking out that "thing". You can look at the Honeycomb grille that the 4wd and lariats get. Either way make sure of what you want the front of the truck to look like. I got 216.00 in the L grille and ~ 26 per for the color glamor caps fr the mirrors...should have done this out of the gate.

As for HD wheels, I don't think that SVT will allow that.
Anytime a HD part is ordered, the vin is needed. This is even to the badges for the truck. I think it was Harley#356 wanted the HD tailgate emblem, the SVT system would not let him order it, the owner of the dealer had to use his HD vin to get it for him.
BTW : Someone got his wheels jacked from his HD, and it is ~ 1000.00 per wheel to et them replaced, so if you could do this it is about a 5000.00 option. After market knock off HD wheels are around, don't know much about them, have not looked,

Lower kits, search on the site you will find all sorts of kits from 3/4 to 1/2 kits that people have used. Ask around you will get a good idea.
Shocks are also another one to look at once you get it off the dealers lot. I went with Bilsteins, some have done the RS9000 / RS 5000 Rancho route. This helps the ride alot over the stockers.

Another good one to check is mods.
Lots have asked about first mods to the truck, ake a look at the options...

That is about it..for pricing use Edmunds or KBB, get the dealer invoice cost for single unit pricing and this is where you should be cost wise. I don't think you have to rush, as the 2003's wont be around for a bit yet, and I think you are out of range on ordering a 2002.

LudeScrew - Welcome to the board!!! Think you will really like your new truck.

Spend the extra dinero on the bigger engine - I have never seen anyone on here say they wished they had bought the smaller engine, but I have seen it the other way.

Yes, the Harleys are lowered from the factory. However, you could probably pay for the lowering kit, new shocks, and install for the same price that Ford is going to charge you to do the swap - parts only!!!

If you like the Harley wheels - go for it. However, be ready to shell out the big bucks - they are VERY expensive!!!

A few people on here have swapped out their emblems for the LOBO emblems - personally I do not like the F150 emblems on the fenders - wish an aftermarket company would come out with something else. The acetoned mod does improve their looks, though.

Good luck with your purchase!!!

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great responses! I was reading up on the site recently, and I am going to use my Xplan option, although I know its non negotiable.. what i am going to try and negotiate for is probably going to be the sound system, or the sunroof, man that would be so awesome!!

The engine, I dont know if I am going to want to get the larger one, I mean i'm not really looking for power, wont really mod it other than probably suspension and wheels, other than that the engine will stay stock.. So i dont know if I'm going to get the 5.4L since I think its quite a bit more? or is it a minor price difference? I will have to speak to my sales rep...

1k per wheel on the harleys!?!!? wow.. i am going to have to get aftermarket, thats insane!! haha.. I am definately going to get the lobo emblems thrown on..

At the end of the month I should be ready to pick it up..
Any recommendations when I go get it?.. out of curiosity anyone know what the invoice price is? i'm supposed to get 4% under that,, i just want to go in as educated as i can ..

thanks all
Mike

man, your trucks are beautiful, LightningCrew.. did you do that to your truck or did it come that way? .... ooohh i want lightning wheels hehe..

Thanks man - actually had the dealer do the install (front end) before I took delivery. The wheels and tires came from eBay, but you can purchase the same set at www.afswheels.com.

Highly recommend the sunroof. And yes, you will need to upgrade the stereo system - not bad for stock, but nothing like a custom system (that is what I am currently working on).

Once again, good luck!!

Hey LudeScrew,

I heard the argument for the bigger enigine and I just figured the 4.6 was big enough for me. Yeah you could probably get a bit more for your truck when you resell it if you had the 5.4. but you probably will have spent more in gas than you'll make back in the resale.

I remember the dealer telling me I'd get more for my truck if I had a slider window and all I could think of is the damn thing leaking in the carwash because my kids forgot to close it. So no rear slider for me.

The way I figure it I plan on keeping my truck a looooooong time. It's my first new car in 13 years. The resale argument just doesn't hold up for me. But everyone is different.

So my advice is read, read, read, look, look and then look again and then buy what makes you happy...
