Screw is Popping.

My 2001 Screw is making a popping sound from the rear bumper or bed. I can't really tell. Seems to come from the twisting of the frame going over small bumps while turning. Anyone else experiance this? If so, did you have it fixed or can you tell what it is. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Have you tried tightening up the spare tire bracket? That seems to be a common source of racket.

No, I have not. Maybe I'll check it tonight. It seems tight from underneath. I can puch down on the bumper at both corners and get it to pop 1 or 2 times. I don't thing anything is really wrong, just annoying as hell.

Spray some WD40 on the rear spring shackles (top and bottom). If the noise goes away, then back off on nuts/bolts and apply some grease under the heads of the bolts and under the nuts. They tend to bind against the bracket/hinge points.

i am parts manager of a ford dealership and this problem sounds like a cracked xsmn crossmember. have seen many many of these, especially on screws. there is a tsb out for this problem. remove your xsmn cross member and where the mount sits on the member there is an additional plate that is supposed to be welded to it. this is more than likely unattatched and the member is cracked.... pretty sure this is the problem ...
let me know
later~~~

Angry SAME HERE!

Same problem with mine. Dealer said it was a rear cab mount so they replaced it. Still there just not as bad. Now I have a knocking sound coming from the right front when going hard into dips or driveways in a right turn. Wasn't there before I got the wheels rotated. Also, dealing with a REALLY irritating creaking sound from my dash. Didn't have these kinds of probs with my Expy, which the wife now drives!

scott,

i'm not sure if this is what your truck is doing...but my truck had a rattle coming from somewhere near the rear of the truck everytime it twisted. sounded like metal on metal...and that's what it was. took it to the dealer and they told me an insulator pad had moved out of place. they put it back and the problem went away. not sure where it was at or which metal pieces it insulated...

Mine is actually poppong. Like something that is in place when it sits flat, but going over a bump, or any time it is in a slight twist, it is like it pops out and then back, if that makes any sense.
