Leak in evaporative system-- small
Leak in evaporative system-- small
I've had this in to the dealer 2 times, and the Service Engine Soon light just came on again this morning, so I made my 3rd appointment. Plugged my code reader in, same code, P0442-- which is a leak in the evaporative system. I've checked the gas cap, it's seated correctly.
The first time I did as thorough of an inspection that I could do. I checked all the lines and everything mentioned in my Chilton guide. Everything looked ok, so I did the reset myself. The gas cap didn't feel right, so I was thinking it may have been the issue. 3 weeks later, it came on again, so I took it to the dealer. They couldn't find anything, and reset the light. About 6 weeks later it came on again. This time they changed the fuel vapor storage canister purge regulator--that took 2 days in the shop. That was about 3 weeks ago.
So in 2 trips to the dealer, I've been down 3 days and still have the problem. Arrgh!! They have late hours, but the emissions person must have a 7-3 job.
Anyone else had such a problem? What was replaced or fixed?
Thanks,
Greg O.

No, they didn't even though I suggested it. As long as they tested it, I guess I'm ok with that. If they change that last though and that fixes the problem, I guess I'll be cranky...

Had that issue on my Explorer. The seal on the gas cap was twisted. Fixed the seal and it cured the problem.
There is a port under the hood where the dealer can plug in a smoke generator and push smoke into the Evap system to find the leaks. There is no reason this should not take more than one visit to the dealer.
