towing a boat with supercrew
towing a boat with supercrew
Got a 2001 supercrew 5.4 with towing pkg.do you think I can tow a 25 boat with out any problems or harm to the truck, boat and trailer est. weight 7500 pounds thanks in advance Joe D
That is a heavy boat for 25 ft. I have a 20 ft boat that weighs about 3500# and tow it with now problems at all. It is a pleasure to tow with the SCrew. If yours weighs 7k you'll feel a little more strain than I do, but it should still tow it. Most important are your brakes with that much weight.
Hey Lake,
I think the guy meant that his gross combined weight rating GCWR is 7500 lbs which sould be no problem for him to haul behind his S'Crew.

I pull a 20ft aluminum boat with my truck (I wish i could tell you the wieght) and have had no problems. Much nicer than my Bronco, I never trusted the brakes on that truck when hauling. Much more comfortable pulling with the supercrew.

Hey Cyber,
I don't think you could carry that heavy load without having dual rear tires with the F load rating, I'd be afraid to give different advice for such a demanding application. Oh, and don't even think about getting away with anything less than a class IV or V weight distributing hitch, it's a must.
Let us know when you get all the required equipment and take some pictures so that everyone can learn what the minumun requirements are for towing extremely heavy loads behind a truck.

I pulled for the first time this weekend with my Screw. Towed a 24ft enclosed trailer that carrys a race car, total weight 7340 lbs. I towed with OD off at 60 to 65 mph, handled it great. My trailer catches a lot of air compared to a boat so you will probably be okay. My Screw is a 4X4, never pulled much weight with a 4X2 1/2 ton truck. The key is proper weight distribution. I also pulled the same set up with my '98 Expy 4X4 it did fine also but the added wheel base of the truck makes for a more comfortable tow. Hook your truck to the boat and pull it before you buy it, just to make sure you feel safe.
Back when I was young and we were poor(er) my father used to haul our 28ft Bayliner Sportfisher (used as a charter boat) with my 1/2 Ton shortbed F-150. The boat weighed in excess of 8000 lbs. and completely dwarfed the truck, but the truck would pull it around no problem. The granny 4 speed with 373 gears helped. The new Supercrews are a lot more truck than my old shortbed. It wouldn't worry me to haul a boat like the one you described with my 2001 Supercrew 4x4. Just exercise caution as you should always do, when hauling something.
I normally tow my 22 Sundeck (4,200lb + 540 Gas/Water + trailer + gear) and have never had a problem with my O1 Screw 4X4 ORP w/ heavyduty tow otions. once you get it rolling it should tow nice. Just make sure you got Surge brakes on the trail or better yet electrical brakes.
Truck looks small next to the boat.
