Remove seat brackets for subs

I know this has been discussed to death but has anyone considered removing the seat brackets and constructing a sub enclosure for the rear seats strong enough to hold 2 average sized adults? It think it might work.

I rarely have anyone in my back seat and want to add another sub woofer. I don't have the patience/skill courage to work with fiberglass and construct something for behind the seats and I definitely do not want to buy the seat raisers for $229.

I think a sub enclosure of 5/8 MDF with several chamber braces would be strong enough to hold 2 average sized adults.

Any comments?

I toyed with that idea for a while. I agree, 5/8 mdf should easily hold an "average" sized adult (whatever that is). I think that doing that would be the easiest and most cost effective way of adding subs back there. You could also incorporate some type of amp rack into the seat.

I just didn't want to lose any of the functionality of the rear seats, or cut anything out. If you don't have that parameter stopping you, I say go for it. If done correctly, it shouldn't be that difficult to build one sturdy enough to put a couple of 300 pounders back there.

Good luck..........JB

another way

You might consider putting the subs behind the back seat. The subwoofer forum shows several examples of multiple subs being placed back there. It's probably no more work than what you're considering.
my 2 cents,

I have one 10" inch under my seat already. It's OK, just OK. I want another simply because I want one. My point is this: to maximize the space available behind the backseat would require fiberglass work. You're not gonna adequate volume any other way. Removing the seat brackets would give you comparable if not more space to work with. Plus, it's easier in my opinion to construct a pure MDF box than mold fiberglass. In the last couple of days, I was able to build a box that holds two 10" woofers that fits extremely snugly under the driver's side rear bench. It measures out to .91 cubic feet. I need at least 1.2 cubic feet. I don't know how it sounds but I can't imagine that two 10s in that tight space will sound good.

All great suggestions, now to settle on one.
