Question Tailgate width just too narrow !!

As much as I like the Supercrew, I have not purchased one yet because the tailgate opening is just too small for my lawn tractor and other items. Does anyone have any suggestions for a remedy from Ford or after market people. I really need a wider opening. Surely Ford is aware of the problem. HELP !!

I thought the supercrew was the standard bed width its length is where it is shorter than most fullsize trucks are you sure you are talking about the width?????

check out this thread for more specs on the bed....

I believe the tailgate opening is the same width as the wheel wells (~50"), so if you can't get something through the tailgate it won't fit anyways...

My Polaris Sportsman 500HO fits just fine, have to leave the tailgate down though.

I just had my JD 185 with a 42 inch deck in there, no problem. Glad I have the Line-X though!

Yeah I think all the F150 series are pretty close on the tailgate opening width. drdos, maybe you should consider a tow package and an inexpensive trailer. If nothing else it will save your back.

I had the SuperCab and now have the SuperCrew. The tailgate opening is measureably narrower by a few inches. My four-wheelers all fit in my SuperCrew (tailgate down), but they are tighter at the opening. Part of the width is lost because of the posts that stick out too. Actually bent one driving in one of the four-wheelers too fast.

Those who compare the Supercrew with the Supercab may be comparing apples and oranges. The Scab offers both Styleside and Flareside pickup boxes. The Flareside has a wider tailgate, but the distance between the wheelhouses is identical (50 in). I consider my Screw tailgate as a Go/No-go gauge for the bed.

I belive that the tailgate on the SCREW is narrower. By how much I don't know. But if you look at the back of a standard F-150 style side the tailgate is wider. The step side bed has the same tailgate at the SCREW and also the same taillights. That's why the Lightning taillights fit on the SCREWs.

As far as a way around it you could get a crane, otherwise get a diffrent truck.

Supercab/Regular cab styleside have the full width tailgate.

supercrew, and the before mentioned flaresides have the narrow tailgate.

Ive had 2 supercrews and the narrow tailgate bothered me too. The only real reason for the enlarged rear corners of the bed that makes it have to have the narrow gate is to fit in the flareside style tail lights (which i dont like as much anyway). So in my case im happier to be back into a supercab styleside.
